I used to think I lived in a pretty decent apartment. Not great, but decent; sure, there’s some water damage on the living room ceiling, and the entire place slants to the left, and there are gaps between the wall and the floor that you can insert your finger into, and the hot water heater only produces enough hot water for a three minute shower, but still. Decent. Second floor, lots of south-facing windows, big yard. Not bad, right?
Wrong. That was before I became a real estate blogger. Now that I get paid to go to open houses around Washington, DC every weekend, I am acutely aware of the wretched conditions I live in. My lighting is not recessed; no, the fixtures protrude vulgarly from the ceiling, like a tent pole in a dentist’s pants. There’s brick, but it’s not exposed; it’s hidden away, pasted over with the plaster of bourgeois squeamishness. The appliances aren’t stainless steel; upon further examination they might even be made of wood. The floors are covered in faded maroon carpeting, stained here and there by cat urine or chewing gum. Basically, I came to realize, I live in a Holiday Inn in Calcutta.
It was hard enough for me to get used to living in an apartment at all.Where I grew up, in small town Iowa, no one lived in apartments except the wretchedly unfortunate. Even the lower class, to which my family belonged for much of my youth, owned large houses with a yard and trees. Even today, when I describe my row house apartment to my parents, they’re horrified.
“So when your neighbor takes a number two, can you smell it?”
“No, mother.”
She nods slowly. It’s obvious she doesn’t believe me.
