What are you going to do about it, white woman?”I wanted to bring up a topic we recently went over in class refugees, and asylum seekers. Refugees are defined as someone being persecuted for race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion and you have had to have crossed a border. Asylum seekers are people who have sought the status of refugee but have not been recognized as such by the host country. We learned in class that they all have basic human rights that apply to them. They should not be treated differently based on their race or citizenship status. I recently read an article in BBC News. It delves into the treatment of asylum seekers in Russia. Russia has a very strong xenophobic government and society. The fear of outsiders is alive and kicking in Russia and has been around for a very long time. This article discusses the racism that many asylum seekers face when in Russia. These are people that have fled their country for God knows what. There is only one location in the northern mountain region for asylum seekers to begin their process. The only way to reach this location is through 800 miles of railway or a flight. I doubt that most people are even able to afford the flight to that location as soon as they enter the country. The people in the article are talking about how they were being persecuted in their country and now they are being persecuted in Russia. An example that was provided is that when they are taken to court hearings they are picked up by car and forced to sit in the trunk for 100km. I find this practice to be deplorable. I cannot begin to understand the reason to put these individuals in the trunk. They are of no threat to you especially since they desire to get...
