Random Tips and Thoughts on European Travel
We are officially home and recovering from our whirlwind European vacation. It was in one word, incredible. It was, without a doubt, the trip of a lifetime and I feel so blessed to have experienced every part of it. The trip recaps will have to wait until I fully recover from jet lag and manage to sort through all 700+ pictures we took. Instead, I wanted to share a few tips and random thoughts about our trip and European travel in general while it's all fresh. Some of the tips I share may seem obvious to most of you, but I learned a lot during our planning and actual trip so I can't resist sharing what I learned!
*Call all credit/debit card companies (for the cards you actually plan to bring and use abroad) and alert them that you will be out of the country*
I can't imagine anything worse than being stuck in a foreign country without any money because your cards have been blocked.
*Some ATMs set limits as to how much money you can take out internationally*
We found this out the hard way in Rome when VABeau tried, unsuccessfully, at 2 different ATMs to withdraw 500euros. One late night angry phone call to Wachovia and a lot of stress later we learned that we had to take out less money at a time, ie 250 euros.
*Speaking of phone calls, it was so nice to have a working phone abroad*
I'm not sure which companies offer global calling, but Verizon's was so easy to set up and use. For only 99cents a minute we were able to make a certain late night call to our bank, call our apartment owners in Rome and Paris, and make dinner reservations.
*Renting apartments in big cities is the way to go*
We saved so much money staying in apartments in Rome and Paris. Not only were they much larger and provided more privacy than hotel rooms, they were also incredibly close to public transportation. Sure it would have been nice to have someone make my bed everyday, but that was a sacrifice I could easily make!
