The candidates running in Sydney/Victoria held a sometimes feisty debate last night. Excerpts from that debate and interviews can be heard throughout the week at CBC’s Information Morning and Mainstreet websites.
Mark Eyking – Liberal
In November of 2000, Mark Eyking, a resident of Millville, N.S., was first elected Member of Parliament for the Federal Riding of Sydney-Victoria.
Mark has served on various committees including the International Trade Commission, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Agricultural Task Force, and the Agricultural Committee.
In 2003 Mark was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and became a member of the Privy Council
Born in 1960, Mark is the fifth of ten children in the family of Dutch Immigrants John and Jean Eyking of Millville.
He is a graduate of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro. Mark and his wife Pam have four children.
Cecil Clarke – Conservative
After 10 years as a senior politician in the Nova Scotia Legislature, Cecil stepped down as the MLA for Cape Breton North and accepted the nomination to be the federal Conservative candidate for the federal riding of Sydney-Victoria.
During his time in provincial politics from 2001-2011, he served in the governments of John Hamm and Rodney MacDonald. He was also an integral member of Jamie Baillie’s Progressive Conservative Caucus.
Cecil has held prominent positions as the Attorney General, Minister of Justice and Government House Leader, Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, Minister of Energy and Nova Scotia’s first Veteran Affairs Minister in 2005 as well as the Minister of Economic Development including responsibility for 5 crown corporations.
