I got to the airport an hour in advance of my flight to Houston. Ginger, I think, had been there for awhile. She was stressed and snappy in the days before departure. As far as I'm concerned, Houston isn't international, even if my final destination is, so I don't need to wait for nothing. And I didn't. Smooth, easy.
I have to admit I was a little concerned about my travel companion. I texted Rebecca once, "What have I gotten myself into?" But she was cheerful Friday morning, the 18th of March 2011. Here we go!
We had a sizable first layover, so we shopped in the airport and then retired in an upstairs bar. Ginger slowly sipped a glass of white wine and looked over her planner while I gracefully chugged 5 beers and met a guy. Christine was right! They're at the airport and in-flight! I will dress next time, no travel-slouchy in my future. I got his card, gave him mine. I'm sure I could "see" him if I wanted, but I'm not interested in a sugar daddy or travel for trade, as it were. I'd chat if he contacted me.
I'm thrilled by the view from the plane. It's alarming even to me how entertained I am by it for hours and hours and every time I fly, but I didn't request a window seat en route to Panama, because it would be night the time we reached the isthmus. I didn't suppose I'd see much, and I really hoped to sleep this leg. Of course I hadn't slept the night before, and I expected to make it up enroute. I didn't.
I ached for a better view as I experienced an airplane window's view of the most extraordinary blood-orange sunset I've ever seen. It was brilliant, and the girl by the window snored right through it! When it faded, I rested my eyes. I glanced at the window later for no particular reason to see... What is that? I squinted and puzzled to make out the waves sparkling in moonlight! Oh! The sea!
I want my spectacular view!
When we landed, Ginger asked "Did you see the Panama Canal?"
