Morsels of Jamaica
With only a handful of hours dangling in front of me during a layover in Kingston, not much time was allotted for me to tackle anything in-depth Jamaican. No languid sunbathing atop the blazing hot sand, no speedy heart-racing jaunts across the zip line and not even any heated haggling among craftsmen at the market. Instead, I utilized this scant number of hours to take a snapshot tour of Devon House national heritage site. Perhaps this kind of default activity fails to embody a bona fide Jamaican experience, but it at least allowed me the opportunity to step upon Jamaican soil while gleaning a few history lessons. Constructed in the 1880s, Devon House was funded by George Stiebel, Jamaica's premier black millionaire. He was one of three well-to-do Jamaicans who built sprawling properties on the appropriately named "Millionaires Corner," a criss cross of Trafalgar and Hope roads. Though the homes of his fellow tycoons met a demise in order to make way for other development projects, Stiebel's mansion remains, and was crowned as a national monument in 1990 by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
I wrangled a jovial chauffeur and his matching jovial mini bus to drive me to this prominent destination, about a 20-minute ride from the Norman Manley International Airport. As the lone passenger, I felt like VIP. We passed monstrous factories, somber shantytowns and a snippet of the calm Caribbean Ocean...
