Europe to Develop New Mobile OS for Online Gaming

Across the world, there is a war being waged in the mobile entertainment industry. Currently, Android and Apple are fighting for the hearts of techies everywhere, but developers in Europe are not pleased with the duopoly. According to various web sources, the European Union is in support of a Europe-centric mobile operating system.

Both Apple and Google Android are American-based initiatives, and the European Union feels that European developers could design an OS more suited to local needs. Additionally, a European-based OS would support local companies and developers rather than Westerners.

Currently, the Symbian is the front-runner for the new mobile entertainment OS in Europe and is being developed to take over a portion of the European market share from Android and Apple. The European Union is spending €11 million to fund the development of the project, while an additional €11 million has been provided by other sources.

Another EU-funded project is the Mosquito. The project was launched in September of 2010 with a €700 000 budget. The project is expected to close over the summer in 2012, by which time the OS should be on the market.
