Barcelona is part of the Catalan region, which is has its own culture, traditions and distinctive cuisine. Here are ten different foods that you must try on your next trip to Barcelona.
1. Pan amb Tomaquet – This is a Catalan breakfast staple that is similar to the Italian bruschetta, but with a slightly different flavour owing to the kind of bread used. This is typically what locals eat for breakfast in the average Catalan home and is usually available in restaurants and cafés.
2. Spanish Omelette – This omelette constitutes a whole meal and can be eaten at any time. They are available in virtually every bar and restaurant in Barcelona and are favourites among the locals.
3. Patatas Bravas – This is a dish that is made from potatoes that have been fried until they are crisp on the outside. They are generally available as tapas in most bars across Spain, but Barcelonan cuisine has added a twist to the recipe, making it doubly special.
4. Paella – Paella is a Spanish rice based dish that is traditionally from the region of Valencia; however, the people of Barcelona have also come up with their own version of Paella in recent years that is equally delicious. This dish is a mix of rice, various spices, vegetables and meats and sea food.
5. Sarsuela – This is a sort of variety dish that is made from different kinds of seafood combined in a casserole. The whole dish is seasoned with spices, sherry and white wine before being baked.
6. Calcotada – This is another Catalan speciality that is made from baby onions that are cooked in an open flame. It is well seasoned and served as either an appetiser or a main course, depending on the quantity.
7. Poma al Forn – This is a kind of pie that is made from apples that have been caramelized, but still remain tender on the inside. The recipe for this dish is generally passed down through families, and is available in many restaurants.
