Author
Nicholas F. Starace II has seen over eighty countries from quaysides and
ship-decks, but it took miniature model versions of ships for him to see his
family. With heart-wrenching honesty, "White Sails Became Me: Memoirs of a
Seafaring Heritage" shares the author’s family tragedies and how they survived
by virtue of a strong determination to fulfill their destiny in America.
A boat builder and seaman from an island near Naples, Starace’s grandfather
immigrated to Brooklyn in the late 1800s and passed down his passion of model
ship building to his grandson. His grandfather’s teachings and a shared passion
for all things nautical had a profound effect on Starace’s career path.
This
time-honored hobby would also help Starace form a crucial bond with his own son
Nicky, before his untimely death at age twenty-six. Nicky’s death woke the
author and his family to the chaotic nature of life and utter despair. Starace
began to look for his family’s identity as a way to make sense of not only loss,
but terrorism, divorce, near-death accidents, earthquakes, cancer, a military
death in the family, and even the pleasant “trauma” of retirement.
Starace’s travel experiences offer an abundance of cultural treasures throughout
"White Sails Became Me". From fascinating safari exploits to life in Europe and
Asia for eleven years, this family saga is a gripping adventure brought to life
even further through wonderful color photo inserts.
