Travel to the Piedmont Region of Italy to visit Asti &
Turin Italy and learn about the roots of Connecticut Governor Ella Tambussi
Grasso with Author Marcella Serpa - Asti, Italy
Marcella Serpa's passion is the study of culture and history. Listen to this
program as we talk about the book she wrote about Connecticut Governor Ella
Grasso, traveling to Asti, Italy to sample truffles and Asti Spumante Sparking
Wine and visiting the Cathedral of Turin to see the Shroud of Turin.
Marcella Serpa lives in Asti, Italy with her husband and son. She has
collaborated with the newspaper "La Stampa" and worked in the area of cultural
exchange. Co-founder of the cultural association "Comunica", whose projects
include her book on Ella T. Grasso, her duties include research, communication,
creation and organization of events. She currently works with the cultural
exchange organization: "La Fabbrica delle Idee" and works in the field of adult
education. She has collaborated on several books written about people from the
Piedmont Region of Italy who have emigrated to other parts of the world. The
book that is the topic of today's discussion is: Ella Tambussi Grasso: from
daughter of emigrants to first woman governor of an American state.
Ella Tambussi Grasso (1919-1981)
Ella Grasso was elected Governor of Connecticut on November 5, 1974. She was
the first woman in the United States to fill that office without having
succeeded her husband who was a doctor in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
Before becoming governor, she was the Secretary of the State of Connecticut
from 1958 to 1970. I recall working on the campaign to elect Ella Grass into the
US House of Representatives. And from 1970 to 1974 she represented me and others
in the sixth district of the State of Connecticut. In 1976 and 1980 her name
came up as a possible candidate for Vice President of the United States. In the
late 70's she declined the post of Ambassador to Italy to stay in office as the
Governor of Connecticut.
More than twenty years since her death, I still remember Ella fondly as a
servant and friend. She grew up just around the corner from my great grand
parents in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Her father, Giacomo Tambussi (1887-1971),
left the hamlet of Perleto at Carezzano, in the province of Alessandria in 1904.
Her mother, Maria Olva (1892-1972) emigrated from Medassino, a small village
near Voghera, Italy in 1906. Her son and family still live and work in Windsor
Locks and the Town of Windsor Locks Connecticut has dedicated a room in the town
hall in her honor.
