What is the cheapest way to travel through Italy?
Q: My friend and I are taking a trip to Europe and we are starting in Italy. We plan to go to Rome, Florence, Siena, Venice, and Verona. I was wondering if bus or train would be cheaper.
A: I live near Verona and take the trains when I go out exploring any of these places. For some of them, you really wouldn't have a viable bus option. Buses supplement the train routes more than competing with them. The buses are more often useful to get to places where there are no train stations. The slower regional trains are cheaper, but in some cases will require you to also make train changes. The fast trains are more expensive, but there are often good discounts offered for early purchase of tickets. For example, the standard 2nd class fare from Rome to Florence on a fast train is 44 euro and the trip takes approximately an hour and a half, but there's a 15% discount for buying at least 7 days in advance and a 30% discount for buying at least 15 days in advance. A regional train takes about 4 hours between Rome and Florence and costs 16.10 euro.
One option for saving money is to take a night train. You can sleep on the train through the night and not have to have a hotel or hostel that night. However, the only option for the places you want to go would be between Rome and Venice in one direction or the other.
