I began with a flight from SFO to LAX on Saturday morning, arriving at about 12:30. All went smoothly on the flight, in the picking up my rental car, and then in meeting my friend Joe for a late lunch in LA. He didn't realize that it was Gay Pride weekend there when he suggested the restaurant where we were to meet. The traffic was a little clogged in that area.
At about 3:30, I hit the road and headed towards the Santa Barbara area, where the main event was graduation at University of California Santa Barbara for Elizabeth, daughter of my ex-partner Tom. I stayed in Summerland, a few miles south of Santa Barbara, at the home of my host, Roger.
Commencement on Sunday morning began under overcast skies, but by the time the graduates filed onto the field and took their seats, the clouds dissipated and we had some sunshine. There must have been at least a thousand people in this group, and it was only one of several ceremonies being held, having begun last weekend and continuing to this one.
I sat with Elizabeth's mom Mary, grandmother Eileen, cousin Zack, brother Brian, and Brian's girlfriend Marissa. The ceremony was fairly short, at about two and a quarter hours. The major part of the time was spent listening to the names being called as each participant came to the stage to shake hands with the Chancellor and faculty members.
The main graduation speaker was one of the professors at the University, a woman who teachers in the Feminist Studies Department and who, during the course of her speech, cited her recent marriage to her female partner of thirty years, a woman who is also a professor at the University.
After the ceremony, I attended a barbecue at the beach with Elizabeth's friends, cousin, brother, brother's girlfriend, and her father Tom, my ex-partner. It was overcast and windy at the beach. The group enjoyed the low key celebration.
