A: Hi there, I'm jamilla and I'm from Libya...
1. 2100USD will it be a good amount as any salary? How much I can save can you please give an Idea? I eat every thing (Veg+nonveg).
***2100 USD is about 2700LYD. i'd say you can get a decent flat for about 500-1000LYD a month. food is incredibly cheap so you shouldn't be spending more than about 200LYD on food a month.

2. Is there any TV service like we have here in India such Cable TV or Dish TV or similar? if yes so please tell me about price of Cheaper option and way to get.
***everyone in libya as cable (most commonly is nilesat) you can pay extra to get more channels, but normal tv is only about 10LYD a month. electricity is about 10LYD a month, so very cheap.

3. Can one get Indian Groceries and other food and stuff in Tripoli?
***most probably but i am not 100% sure

4. Is there any restaurant which provides Indian food at modest rates?
***i think so, most likely in the very centre of tripoli, but ask around

5. Till date what I understand is Alcohol is banned so I won’t talk about it and allied things.
***yes, alcohol is banned, as are pork products

6. What is in general? do the employer keep our passport with them?
*** no, keep your passport with you, to avoid fraud and theft.

7. How is employer’s behavior in General towards working Indian?
*** i think very good, people in libya are generally very accepting of other people

8. Is there any place where Indian could see each other, make friend and get together etc?
*** maybe at an indian restaurant, or you could ask the indian embassy about other places to meet other indian people.

9. Any Beach Resort or Beach Side where Indian could go and relax? And details about Prices, Food, Free of cost places etc.
*** there aren't any beach resorts, usually people go to the beach and bring there own food and have a picnic, it is about 10 dinar and you can rent a hut and table and chairs

10. What is security condition for Indians?
*** libya is a generally safe country

11. Any Dedicated School for Indian Children?
*** i don't think so but i know there is an american school in tripoli, a european school in benghazi (another big city) and many english speaking schools also.

12. Indian Embassy’s Role and Nature?
*** not sure, perhaps you should contact the libyan embassy in india?

13. How is transport system? Price and Safety?
*** there are no trains or buses, everyone uses a taxi, they are very cheap.

14. Internet Service? Price, Quality and any restriction on websites; if any?
*** internet is okay, you can get dial-up or wireless, dial-up is a lot cheaper, but wireless is better quality, you can also go to internet cafes as there are many. www.youtube.com has been banned recently in libya, but that is the only one i know of.
15. Maid (House help for washing, iron and cleaning)? Price and availability?
*** yes i think you can get maids who will come in and clean, but not that will stay in the house, i don't think this will be too expensive.

And any other vital information which you feel might be in my interest please do let have .
*** no, just remember it is a muslim country so respect it. errrm, if you have any other questions then feel free to email me.

Libya Life Style, Cost of Living for Indian?

Q: Hi,

What is the cost of Living in Tripoli, I mean the Food Items [Water, Soft drinks, Vegetables, Fruits, Cereals, Millets, Spices, Chicken, Whisky, Soaps, Toothpastes, Clothes, Chicken Shawarma (if I choose to eat out some times), Cigarette], Cable/DISH/Satellite TV, Mobile (with call rates and name of good GSM service provider), Internet, Restaurants, Banking Services, Mode of Transfer of Salaries etc.
Please tell; how is life in general and what is Good in Libya and What is Bad.
Please try to write you reply in Details; It will help me to understand.
Thanks,

A: Hello :)

You know, I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Although Tripoli is considered more expensive than, say Misurata, it still remains reasonable to all.

To begin with, don't dream of finding alcohol in Libya ^_^ we don't drink!

As for the other stuff on your list:

Food:

Basically in Libya, you can get water from the tap. But in Tripoli, it tends to be a bit heavy and not so healthy if you excess. So, your option is to buy mineral water in bottles. 1ltr bottle range from 1 to 1.50 LD which is around 50p (British currency)

Soft drinks are almost the same as water. Small boxes are around 50c to 75c LD

Soaps range from 50c to 2 LD for bars, as for shower gels that would be around 1 to 3 LD per bottle.

Toothpastes: 1 to 3 LD per tube (of course it depends on what brand you chooce)

Clothes: 5 to 50 LD for casual clothing, jeans are between 10 to 30 LD normally.

Chicken shawarma's very popular in Libya, and you can easily find them in Tripoli. They would range from 1.50 to 3 LD (try Tabuna ^_^ which is a kind of chicken shawarma/ burger, with fries and eggs! yummmy!!)

Hmmmm cigarettes? I don't smoke but my guess would be around 3 to 5 LD

Cable, dish, satellite, TV.... that would probably cost you around 500 to 700 LD (but not quite sure, as I'm a girl and girls don't deal with that stuff in Libya :D )

Mobile: You can get one from a mere 30 to 1500 LD (depends on the brand... newer ones are sky high!!) Phone companies are Libyana and Madar... I can't tell which one's best, I believe each has its own preferences, but it is known that Madar has better coverage than Libyana... Libyana is cheaper and widely spread.

Internet: If it's still the same, I joined LTT services with only 10 LD (around 5 British pounds) I don't know how it is for foreigners, but you can always contact the company to inquire. It's not so difficult to get internet connection, as long as the place you're staying at has a landline...

Restaurants: There are a number of good ones in Tripoli. Fast food restaurants (that we consider as the equivilant to McDonald's XD) like Mommen, can be found near the Green Square in the heart of Tripoli. There's a great Pizzeria called Pizza House in Gergarish, and there you can also find Mommen, Cook Door and many more.

Banking Services: Are relatively good. We have Western Union services as well as MoneyGram, so you can easily transfer money from/ to abroad.

Life in general is pretty much relaxed. We are a 100% Muslim country and very conservative in comparison to other neighboring Arab countries. There's a lack of law abiding in general, and I mean in terms of driving. People seem to drive the way they prefer, and the only thing that's keeping them in order somehow is the traffic lights (but not always lol) you can park anywhere you like...sadly.

People are quite friendly in Tripoli and are eager to talk to foreigners. Hospitality is one of our major traits and you are always welcome to attend a wedding -out of curiosity :) - if you pass by one.

The worst thing about it is probably the weather... totally hot in the summer. But winters are mild and rainy... spring is the best time to be there :P

Our traditional food is really good and make sure to try our version of couscous with onion sauce and chickpeas on top! Yummmmmy!! T_T

There's a rising number in shopping malls so you won't get bored or anything. One is called Almahari in Aldahra... another one is quite good as it is cheap called Alhayis in Gergarish.

Hope that helped :)

Good luck !!
