How are the flat (straightening) irons in Tokyo? And where is the best place to purchase one?

Q: I am headed off to Tokyo soon (to live for a few years) and I was wondering how are the flat (straightening) irons in Tokyo?

I sometimes read that flat irons in Japan don't get as hot as flat irons in, say, America.
I really need a flat iron that gets hot enough to straighten my very thick and wavy hair.
And where can I get these types of flat irons?

Thanks!

A: Do you mean hair straightening irons?
You can purchase it in departments stores (aplliance and electronics section) or in Electronics Retail stores such as Yamada Denki, Kojima Denki, etc...
Most hair straigthening irons here have temperature setting features, so you could adjust the heat from 90-170C or 190C. If you have a very thick and wavy hair, you should look for Minus Ion Hair Iron, which emits negative ion and hot steam. Negative ion in hair straighteners diminish frizziness and naturally condition the texture of the hair. It will also help deodorize and freshen your hair and scalp.

Hope I helped.

If you go to a department store, you could buy a flat iron.

It becomes 60-180C degree, usually. I don't know about flat irons in US. Isn't it enough?

What is the piano music that plays all over Tokyo everyday at 5pm?

Q: We took a vacation this spring in Tokyo and noticed that at 5pm a 10 to 20 second music piece was played. We heard it in multiple neighborhoods. Was wondering what it is? Is there a sample online? What is it for?

A: It's not played all over Tokyo.

It depends on each neighborhood (ku or shi) which music is played and when it's played.

I live in Tokyo. In my town, it's played at 5:30 in summer and 4:30 in winter.

    So the story goes:

In the old days, bells from the local temple and shrine would ring around 5' o'clock, signaling the end of a day. After a long and hard days work out in the fields, the sound was indeed a welcome respite for the farmers. Somehow, they have retained this custom (and the melody too), luckily bridging the gap between the past and present, the old and the new.

Different municipalities might play the song at different times as well.

it was probably yuyake koyake. Here is a choral version of the song.

Is a year of dancing enough to get me a job at Tokyo Disneyland?

Q: I've never done any dancing before but am 17 and would like to work at Tokyo Disneyland when I turn 18 just for a year or so.

If I was to start dancing lessons now do you think I would be able to get a job in a year's time? I've taken drama classes before so can do the acting part already.

A: Sorry- but probably not.
Most professional dancers have been dancing for a long time, and it takes a long time to build up good technique, no matter what type of dance style you're doing.
It's not only that, but you also have to learn how to pick up choreography. Dance routines are taught pretty fast, and you want to perform them the best you can every time, not look like a fool in class because you can't remember which step comes next. You could always dance for fun, though! :D

I assume you are fluent in Japanese?
  • Naturally Pretty says:
I don't know, most professional dancers have been dancing all their lives compared to your measly year. Most really really good dancers have been dancing since they were very very young like 3 years old. They've got a lot of skills and practice time under their belts. I guess it all just depends on how good you are and how good you can get in a year's time. Just audition and see. Don't get your hopes up though, just in case.

How many Tokyo Boys and Girls volumes are there?

Q: Tokyo Boys and Girls is a manga and I don't know how many english volumes there are.

A: there are 5 not sure if they have been made in english

Which are the best places to visit in Tokyo for an anime/manga enthusiast?

Q: Include places within Tokyo like Shibuya/Harajuku etc, specific shops or stores there which are replete with otaku experiences or sell the most kawaii merchandise AND suggest other cities which include a bit of history of Japan like Kyoto and Osaka. Mostly, I want specific details from others who've visited/live there and feel this place isn't a tourist trap but is really an otaku's dream. Thank you!^^

A: In Tokyo the best place for an anime/mange enthusiast is definitely Akihabara. There are so many shops, you have trouble going in them all.

I'd also recommened going to the manga museum in Kyoto. I'm not as interested in manga as one of my fellow travelleres but I found it really enjoyable as well as him. :)

For culture my favourite place was, without a doubt, Kyoto. I would also recommend going to Mirajima.

Hope this helps.
