  • Average American says:
Shanghai is the wrong place to go "on a budget". Would you visit New York or Paris without enough money? Shanghai is an expensive city.
  • flingebunt says:
China is a place where man independent travellers decide to join a tour group.

    This is for 2 reasons
    1. There is a lot to see
    2. Getting around can be a bit confusing sometimes

However for independent travelers staying in backpacker orientated places means they will help you buy train tickets, book local tours and so on.

Shanghai is not really a backpacker friendly city, but head off to Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing there are plenty of backpacker hostels and a lot to see just by walking around.

The preferred backpacker route is actually Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Guillin and Yangshou, Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangrila. These cities are connected by buses that often pull up to the door of backpacker hotels, lots of English speaking waiters in restaurants and shops.

How to get to the expo site from the railway station of Shanghai?

Q: How to get to the expo site from the railway station of Shanghai?

A: Trust me. Don't go to the Expo. It looks really cool, but its really not worth it. The lines are long and its really hot there. Theres not much to see. It's a waste of money. Trust me. Don't go there. Instead, so to the Oriental Pearl. It amazing, it even has a revolving resturant.

Good Luck

Is Shanghai bike friendly? Is it easy to get around to the main tourist sites on a bicycle?

Q: Is Shanghai bike friendly? Is it easy to get around to the main tourist sites on a bicycle?

A: Traffic in Shanghai and most Chinese cities is a complete nightmare. Congested roads are shared by unruly cars, trucks, scooters, bikes, and the ubiquitous motorized tricycle carts. Traffic rules are generally ignored, vehicles routinely cross the center line into oncoming traffic, and pedestrians beware of traffic coming from 360 degrees around them.

People from western countries should not drive bikes in China. The likelihood of being killed during a 1 hour bike ride in Shanghai is extremely high.

Where can I find all the foreign biotech companies in Shanghai?

Q: I am looking for all the foreign biotech companies in Shanghai because I would like to work at one of them. I'm looking for foreign companies only, not Chinese ones.

Or, maybe a list of ALL foreign companies that have branches in China would be ok too. There should be sth like that somewhere.

Does Shanghai have Beach, Nearby?

I answered the question Does Shanghai have Beach? before: No.

Wendy and I have been searching beach in Shanghai many times. We went to many claimed beach in Shanghai - the Jinshan Beach, or the Fengxian beach. So far, the nearest real beach is at Shengsi.

This time, we continued our search to the north side of the Yangtze River, and arrived at Changshazhen, at Rudong, Nantong.

To our disappointment, there is so no beach there. What we see is very like the scene at Dishui Lake in Shanghai.

My car, Bandenger, with wind mill as background.

We finally confirmed that in lands formed with sands from rivers, like Yangtze River, there is no way to form beach. Beach can only be found when waves of sea or ocean hit hard rock of mountains.

The next time, we may need to go to places as far as Shandong to find beach. Rizhao, or Qingdao is good candidate.

We will report when we finally find beach near Shanghai.
