If I travel to Scotland for a visit can I bring a cat back home to the states?

Q: My boyfriend isn't able to keep his cat. He lives in Scotland. Would I be able to travel there and bring it back with me?

A: Obviously "jessi" is making a wild guess about the cat being quarantined...she gave no reference. Cats brought into the U.S. do NOT need to be quarantined. see the CDC site below for accurate U.S. gov't information. You will need to call the airline you will be using and ask their requirements as far as a heath exam document for the kitty and what kind of kennel you need, and the fee. This is a very lucky kitty and I hope he adapts well to his new home.

• Jessi says:
Yes, but once you return to the states, the cat will have to be quarantined for a certain amount of time to make sure it is healthy.
• SLF says:
you need to check the US quarantine laws if any. If you were going the other way round - from the US to Scotland - you would need to put kitty into quarantine for 6 months because of British rabies laws.
Be aware that the cat will have to travel in the hold, which would be extremely stressful, and that the airline will probably charge a lot to transport it.
• adfa says:
yes

Do i need a passport to travel into Scotland from Britain by car?

Q: And same Q for northern Ireland and Ireland.

A: No you don't need for Scotland or Northern Ireland as they are part of the British Isles. I'm not sure about Southern Ireland though, I think you will require phot id for there. I know because I cross the Scottish border regularly by car. Enjoy your trip!

• Daniel R says:
Scotland is in Britain.
• ruthdot21 says:
Scotland is in Britain. You don't need a passport to travel from England to Scotland or Wales or Northern Ireland. But Southern Ireland (Eire) is a different country and you probably need a passport.
• Caz says:
noooooooo lol
• Alex M says:
ffs why don't English people ever know the difference between England and Britain?

And no you don't need a passport to travel between ENGLAND and Scotland because we're all part of the United Kingdom of Great BRITAIN & Northern Ireland.
• patrik says:
no...though you may require a brain cell to read the map!
• Beastie says:
First bit. Short geography lesson. Scotland, England and Wales are one island. This island is Britain. Scotland is the northern half and is part of Britain, as are England and Wales. Northern Ireland is, as the name suggests, part of the island of Ireland but is part of Britain for political purposes.

You do not need a passport to travel from England (which is presumably what you mean by Britain) to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

You will need a passport to enter southern Ireland (Eire) because it is a different country and is not ruled under the British Government.
• lizroswelluk says:
No, scotland is part of great britain, therefore you dont need a passport. Same thing for going from Scotland or england to northern Ireland. If you want to travel to Southern Ireland then you do need a passport as this is not part of Great Britain.
• Gary333 says:
I agree with the other answers apart from the Southern Ireland bit. You do not need a passport to travel from N. Ireland to the Republic (and vice versa) by car. There are no border controls on the roads between the two countries.
If you are flying, you would need photo ID or a passport.
• PETE HAS CHEESY FEET says:
no not scotland ive been there by coach definitely not and nor .do you need one for northern ireland .(i do not think so anyway) but i think you need a passport for southern ireland
• Weekday says:
Scotland is IN Britain.

Good Lord.
• Stephen says:
If you are driving - England into Scotland or from Northern Ireland into the Republic - you do not need a passport. People cross both borders on a daily basis and there are not passport controls.

The only time you might need a passport is if you are flying as airlines may specify that you need a valid passport as proof of ID at the airports. Not sure about ferry crossings (Scotland - Northern Ireland & Wales to ROI) but the relevant ferry companies would confirm what type of ID you would require for such a journey.
• Ed says:
Only for Ireland
• younosygit says:
Oh God, what do they teach kids in school these days?!

Firstly, you mean "travel into Scotland from England by car", since both England and Scotland are part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as are Wales and Northern Ireland. Since they are all the same country then OF COURSE you don't need a passport to travel by land, though if you're flying (even between two places in England) then the airlines may insist on seeing your passport.

Most of the other respondents have got part of their answers wrong, though. British and Irish citizens do NOT need a passport (or any other form of identification) to cross the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, or to travel on the ferries between Wales or England and the Republic (though it's recommended that you carry some form of ID), even though they are different countries.
• I should be doing something else says:
Britain is the name of the island on which Scotland, England and Wales are on. By Britain, I assume you mean England, and no, you do not need a passport.

There are no passport checks between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as we have a common travel agreement BUT this agreement only exists for British and Irish citizens, so if you are not a British or Irish citizen, then you will need to have your passport/ID and your visa if necessary.
• RR says:
Scotland is part of Britain.

England + Scotland + Wales = Great Britain

Great Britain + Northern Ireland = UK.

Passports are not required to move between any of them.

The Republic of Ireland (Southern Ireland) is a separate nation and you would need a passport.

Best way to travel from Ireland to Scotland?

Q: Looking for a cost effective and easy way to travel from Ireland to Scotland. Bus? Train?

A: You can get a cheap flight with Ryanair, http://www.ryanair.com Sometimes you might pick up a flight for about €40 or €50 return - or even less. Or get a cheap flight with Aer Arann or Aer Lingus, http://www.aerarann.com and http://www.aerlingus.com Presently flights are grounded because of the volcanic ash and the alien spores.

Since there is a body of water in the way a train or bus is not going to be much good is it?

No flights at the moment thanks to the bloody Icelandics not keeping their volcanoes under control.

So - cycle to Dunlaoghaire, then take the ferry to Liverpool. Hitchhike to Scotland or take the train.
• k says:
used to be cheap easyjet flights going from edinburgh to dublin not sure if its vise versa could be a cheap option i got a flight return for £40 last year worth looking into.

you cant get a train over.

you could get a bus but that would take ages and involve a ferry
• agooddub says:
Bus to Belfast, commuter bus to Larne, ferry to Stranraer and then decide where in Scotland you want to end up.
• Anna says:
There isn't any bus or train from Ireland to Scotland, unless it can successfully run over water.

WHERE in Ireland and Scotland are you traveling from?
I suggest going to Northern Ireland then getting a ferry over to Scotland.

Cheapest way to get from Scotland to Nrth Ireland and Ireland?

Q: What would be the cheapest way to travel from Scotland to Ireland.. I was thinking flying from Scotland to Belfast and taking a bus down to Dublin. How long would the bus ride take? And is Belfast worth making the trip or would going straight to Ireland be better? I'm planning to spend less then a week doing this as well..

I'm travelling to Scotland in August and need some help?

Q: I'm going to Scotland in August and was wondering what is the main bus line there? I need to look up timetables and such before I go so I can travel from Coatbridge into Edinburgh and Glasgow.
