What is the best way to get from a hotel in Newark to Manhattan?

Q: My family is taking a trip to New York City this summer, and we've booked a hotel in Newark near the airport. What is the best way to get from the hotel to Manhattan?

A: If you're hotel has a complementary shuttle service, you can take the shuttle bus to the Newark Airtrain station P4 and take the Airtrain, which is a monorail, from there to Newark-Liberty Airport train station.

Once at the train station, you can take any New York City-bound (eastbound) NJ Train to New York Penn Station. The one way fare from Newark Airport to the New York Penn Station will cost you $15 per person, per trip ($30 per person). The trip from the airport to the city take about 20 to 25 minutes.

I hope this information was very helpful. If you have any questions or need travel directions while in town, just drop me a line by clicking on the avatar and e-mail icon in the profile. I'll be glad to help.

Good luck

Rail. Take NJ Transit from the Newark Airport station to Penn Station New York (not Penn Station Newark).
  • Jamerican Steve says:
Does your hotel have a shuttle or complimentary bus? You should ask.
    http://411newyork.org/guide/2008/01/27/new-york-area-hotels-with-shuttles/ (Hotels w/ Shuttles)

If the hotel does have one, they can drop you at Newark Penn Station (or back to Newark Liberty) where you can take any NY train over to Manhattan.
    http://411newyork.org/guide/2007/04/17/newark-airport-to-new-york/ (Instructions from NJ)

Using the trains from Newark is about US$15 for an adult. To cut the cost (and travel slower to Manhattan) buses are available for US $7.00 for an adult. After exploring Manhattan, the hotel can either pick you up from Newark Airport or Newark Penn Station (be sure to ask where in advance they pick up) if they have shuttle service for you.

If no shuttle service, bus or limo, you'll have to make it back on your own with a private shuttle, cab or NJ transit train & bus.

Summer is storm season so expect flight delays and have a few days backup money for your families hotel stay should flights be grounded and delayed for days due to the weather.

Take the NJ Coast Line Train from the Newark Airport Railroad Station to NY Penn Station.

What is the best way to get to Carlo's Bakery from Manhattan?

Q: What is the easiest and cheapest way to get to Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken NJ from upper east side Manhattan? We'd like to take a ferry if possible.

A: Take the PATH Train to 23rd street and then switch to the M subway.

  • David says:
Well, the ferry is nice, and will provide a more memorable journey than taking the bus, but don't expect it to be the cheapest option. (You only live once, though, as the saying goes.)

Once you've taken the ferry and arrived at Hoboken Terminal, the bakery is roughly a five minute walk away. Here are the Google Maps results for walking from 1 Hudson Place (in Hoboken, NJ) to 95 Washington Street (also in Hoboken, NJ). The first is the address for the Hoboken Terminal, the second for the bakery.

    1. Head west on Hudson Pl toward River St 469 ft
    2. Take the 1st right onto River St 262 ft
    3. Take the 1st left onto Newark St 0.1 mi
    4. Turn right at the 3rd cross street onto Washington St. Destination will be on the right
EDIT: The company that operates ferries between NYC and Hoboken is called NY Waterway. Their phone number is 800 53 FERRY (800-533-3779) and the website is http://www.nywaterway.com/
EDIT 2: Wow, a thumb down... I'd love to hear the rationale for that, quite frankly. Unbelievable.
  • NYC Chutzpah says:
Subway (take subway to 42st then shuttle to west side and then downtown BMT) to 34th st Herald Square look for the signs to the PATH train. PATH train to Hoboken walk west to Washington St. north on Washington St to bakery. This is the least expensive way to get there. One suggestion have lunch or a snack at La Isla on Washington and around 3rd st.

Should you really trust the valet parking in Manhattan New York?

Q: Im going to Manhattan New York and the only thing we know for parking is the valet parking. Should we really trust that? Because some strangers are taking your car and parking it for you, but what if they take your car and drive away with it !?
That might sound kind of weird, but im worried.
And can you give some ideas on parking ?
Thanks in advance !

A: It is possible that someone can pose as a valet but you can ask the hotel in advance the clothing (the valet dresses in) and identification that the valet should show you upon arrival.

The valet is also to give you a ticket as well so you can get the vehicle back. Please look it over carefully.

Valet service is an extra charge so you may want to park it yourself if that option is available then get on of those bellhop carts to carry your family things in.
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/9891154/2/istockphoto_9891154-bellhop-with-luggage-cart.jpg

Be sure to give the valet key (not the master key) if your vehicle has one.
http://www.alfapro.com/images/Keys1.jpeg

It will stop the trunk from opening and glovebox as well but the trunk on most vehicle can be open from inside with a button or lever so if that has a lockable feature too, activate it for your privacy.

There are a few hotels with free parking in NYC but unfortunately, they are not 4 stars and/or pet friendly as you requested in a previous post.

Have a safe trip.

How do I get from Newark International Airport to Manhattan or The Bronx?

Q: How do I get from Newark International Airport to Manhattan or The Bronx?

I'm looking to use either the bus or the train. How long does it take? How much does it cost?

Thanks :)

A: Take the #62 NJ Transit bus to Newark Penn Station. From there, take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line into New York Penn Station, in Manhattan. From there, you can take the subway to your destination.

You can also take the PATH train from Newark Penn Station to Lower Manhattan and take the subway from there, or you can transfer at Grove Street to a PATH train towards Midtown Manhattan.

The trip should take a round an hour to an hour and a half to get to Manhattan, depending on how well you make your connections. From there, you may or may not have to take the subway, depending on your final destination. (By the way, can you let us know where you are going, either an address or a neighborhood, so we can give you more exact directions).

If you take the NJ Transit train into NY Penn Station, it will cost you $1.50 for the #62 bus, $5.00 for the NJ Transit train, and $2.25 for the subway, if you need it, for a total of $8.75.
If you take the PATH train into Lower or Midtown Manhattan, it will cost you $1.50 for the #62 bus, $1.75 for the PATH train and $2.25 for the subway, again, if you need it, for a total of $5.50.

You can find discounts at the following sites:

See PATH fares at: http://www.panynj.gov/path/fares.html
See NYC Subway fares at: http://mta.info/metrocard/
See NJ Transit fares at http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0070.pdf

Hope this helps.
