Q: I stayed two months in London this past summer. I absolutely loved the city, but I was surprised and really disappointed at how the food is generally not very good. The food was not completely terrible, mind you I ate at two or three amazing restaurants, but most places were just simply average. I am not talking about traditional english food, but all types of different cultural food in London. This surprises me because for such a gigantic, multicultural city, one would think the food would be amazing. Also, the portions are ridiculously small for such expensive prices. I am from San Francisco and there are tons of amazing restaurants here, and I know other American cities have that too. Is there any possible reason for this disappointment in London's food?
Well I understand how going into a random restaurant in any big city can be a hit or miss, but shouldn't the tourist areas have some decent food, despite the expensive prices? Btw thanks to nelly7, and I went to Tayyabs and the food is AMAZING! Thanks to that place I got into Indian/Pakistani food, that place is awesome!
A: There are loads of great restaurants in London for all sorts of cuisines and budgets, but there are lots of bad ones too especially in the tourist areas, so you have to do your research. I never eat anywhere without checking multiple review sites (time out, london-eating, etc).
First time I went to New York I found the food very disappointing, but this was probably because I didn't do any research (I was younger and not as into food as I am now) so likely got duped into eating at tourist traps.
I've found there are some places in the world (like Santigao in Spain) where you can pop into any restaurant and it'll be good, but I think those places are the exception rather than the rule.
That said, I'm sorry you didn't have great food in London. If you ever come back, here's some personal recommendations for you:

Q: I am looking to obtain a list of all restaurants in London (names, addresses and telephone numbers) so that I can put them up on my website.
How do I go about doing this (legally)?
A: http://www.london-eating.co.uk/
Q: I'm looking for a cozy place to have Thanksgiving dinner with a few friends in central London. Thoughts?
A: They used to do a Canadian Thanksgiving dinner at the Maple Leaf in Covent Garden, but don't know if they are doing it this year. They did the Turkey and fixings and pumpkin pie.
Q: It's my boyfriend's birthday in November and I'd like to suprise him with a nice meal in London and then probably stay in a hotel up there after, as he is always spoiling me and I want to do something nice for him.
He's quite traditional and likes his prawn cocktail and steak! lol but he does like Italian as well.
Does anyone know any nice places they'd recommend? We will either be traveling from Epping, Essex on the tube or from Fenchurch Street/Tower Hill.
A: The Ivy- covent garden
Claridges- mayfair
Zizzi's- there are many, just search the net.
Zizzi's is a great place to go. There is a beautiful one in paddington that I recommend and just a 2 minutes walk away is the Novotel hotel in Sheldon Square. Sheldon square is a lovely area and beautiful at night also where you can sit and watch Little Venice at night with all the canals, glowing lights and there are a few cafes open till late if you feel like a nice drink together. Hope I helped. Please do check out Zizzi's though, it is fantastic.
Q: My girlfriend is coming back to London and i haven't seen her for 6 weeks. I'm wanting to take her out for a romantic dinner when she gets back, but wanting something on a bit of a budget, as we're both not working at the moment...
Any ideas of places with a nice, quiet, romantic atmosphere (candles, privacy, etc) that isn't too expensive???
A: Savoir Faire in New Oxford Street is a restaurant with a great atmosphere, that sells great food at reasonable prices. They have a fixed price menu that more than satisfies and the quality beats their more expensive rivals by a mile. This is a very good french restaurant.
If you fancy something more eastern european, get along to Sarastro at 126 Drury Lane. When you order your meal, they bring complimentary appetisers that are very satisfying. The food is very good, and the surrounding s of the place are breath taking. The theme is based on opera, and you can book a table that is lie sitting in a box at the theatre. The loos provide an interesting talking point too.
I can heartily recommend both of these . Do have a wonderful evening.

Just take your pick about the type of food you want.
Many pubs offer the best vale.
As to quantity, most British tourists to USA complain about being given too much on their plates! Just what you are used to. Wonder why there are so many obese Americans.
Remember food costs in USA are artificially low due to US subsidies to farmers. These affect the rest of the world's ability to export food there and are a major contributory factor to world poverty. Farmers have votes so the government is unwilling to reduce these subsidies.
