Q: My friend and I are planning a trip to Europe in the summer of 2011, and we would like to bike from Geneva, Switzerland to Vienna (Wien), Austria. What we want to know is if this is possible? According to Google maps, the drive (stopping along at various other cities along the way) is about 12.5 hrs by car, and 9 days by foot. Neither of us can drive a motorcycle/vespa (nor can get licensed in time), and cars just aren't our thing.
Any thoughts??
The cities we were thinking of are: (in this order - *work in progress!)
-Switzerland - Geneva, Lausanne, Berne, Zurich, Lucerne
-Liechtenstein
-Austria - Innsbruck, Salzburg, Vienna
Thoughts?? We also appreciate any suggestions on places to go/not go!
Thanks!!!
A: Are you used to riding a bike in mountains?
If not, rethink an use public transport. The train for most journeys and maybe some local buses if you want to get to odd places that are not on the train system.
In sources I will put a few useful links.
If you really like riding bikes, it will be possible but not easy.
I put your travel ideas into a bike travel planner that is using long distance bike routes:
http://www.fietsrouteplanner.eu/content/view/104/109/
The actual planner is in Dutch and the names in Austria and Switzerland are often translated and hardly recognizable. But you can put the pointers on the map and see for yourself if you want to try.
The route it finds is over 1600 km, 1000 miles, and most of those through mountains.
But all of it is in routes.
If you restrict yourself to routes in English, GPS track and/or signposted, the distance will be even longer.
Unless you are Tour de France quality bike riders, forget it.
Q: Are there any German public schools in French-speaking cities like Geneva and Lausanne?
Are there any French public schools in German-speaking cities like Zurich, Basel and Bern?
If there are, can a student(and parents) choose which school s/he goes to without any restrictions or do they have to meet certain requirements in order to attend a different language speaking school?
Goddess of Grammar got it right. I was asking about regular public schools(state-funded school) which use German(French) as a medium of instruction. I wasn't asking about international schools for German/French citizens.
A: Not really (unless you mean what Mr Punctuation thinks you mean, which strikes me as unlikely). State schools in German-speaking cantons are in German, and in French cantons are in French. I'm not quite sure how it works in bilingual cities like Biel/Bienne and Fribourg/Freiburg. Several of the gymnasiums (advanced secondary schools) in Zurich do offer bilingual/immersion programmes though (German/English or German/French)--and yes there are tests to get in (though the language component of the tests is quite modest).
Generally speaking a student/parents can not choose their schools (again, except for the gymis) though in particular cases they can make special requests which may be honoured.
