Q: I am doing a TEFL course in Surabaya in summer of 2011 but have heard it is cheaper to get a flight to Jakarta then travel to Surabaya by internal transport. Has anyone done this before or does anyone know what the trains are like, and would they be safe of a young female traveling alone? or what the internal flights are like?

A: if you ask the cheapest I would choose to take the bus. but the price is not much different with train.
and with plane cost two times more expensive but faster.
the bus takes more than 12 hours, train takes more than 10 hours and plane takes 1 hours 10 minutes.
I lived in Indonesia and my father never allowed me to travel out of town alone at night especially. but it would be fine if you go during the day, and do not fall asleep. I hear on the trains and buses are many pickpockets though I have never experienced it myself when traveling by bus or train (and I'm not alone).
I do not know the price of next year (because the prices change every day) but I can tell now estimated between buses trains and planes.
bus around Rp. 200000 (executive, AC, more comfortable seating)
train around Rp.150000 (business, no AC, uncomfortable seats) and Rp. 300.000 - 350.000 (executive, AC, more comfortable seating) Do not accept food that is given by trains stewardess because it's not for free.

A: I don't think u need a S'pore visa for transit, you are not getting out of the airport, u just catching your connecting flight to Jakarta. Unless u are going through immigration then u need a visa.

A: Most martial arts in other countries are not cheap, as well you have to look into their heritage (if they really have linage) are they really teachers or is it a scam.. I wanted to take some kung fu, in southern china.. and jeeze its like 3 grand a week, but their heritage is real dating 100s of years back.. Honestly dude your gonna have to do some research on your own, it takes time.. no one on here is gonna be able to tell you anymore than yahoo, unless they are from indonesia of course.. good luck man, hope i helped..
