Q: How many Armenian churches in Istanbul are still open for service on a regular basis? I have heard there are two, but can't find the exact info.
A: Unfortunatly there are only 3 that I know of
that are active...
You can google the names to get their mass schedules..
The Armenian Patriarch
The Church of Ortakey Kirkor Lusarovich
The Cathedral of Sakizagadji Surp Asdvazazin.
Also try this..
http://www.mymerhaba.com/Armenian-Churches-in-Turkey-126.html
You can call them directly to see if the others are
active...
@iph Actually you are wrong as usual, and having
to point this out to you on every question must
be a bit embarrassing for you, so why do you
bother, and the amount of TD I receive from you
or any immature egotist slimming through here with 20
accounts just as slimy, won't change that fact.
The fact many of these churches may be still
standing, does not mean they are active.
For reasons due to lack of a congregation or
lack of clergy, or the churches are being used for other
purposes.
This has been verified by Turkish Armenians
FYI...
Q: In the times of the early Ottoman Sultans 15th/16th centuries, how where people alerted to attacks on the city (mainly from the sea?) Beacons? Bells? I read somewhere that Christian churches were permitted to continue practising their faith but that the ringing of church bells were forbidden, were bells used in general in Istanbul?
A: yes, Churches were permitted as the ottoman empire was a multi religion empire that did not (as the islam demands) take agressive steps against jewish and christian people - although the big and best churches became mosques and most people switched to islam because they hoped to gain the new leaders favours, got benefits or whatever. 1477 1/3 of the people were (greek) christians, 1/9th were jewish and the rest islamic people.
- Today there the church is heavily prossecuted in Turky because after the fall of the Ottoman empire Ataturk wanted a state with only one religion, as well as with only one people - Turks everyone else sufferes.
Alarm System: Acutally they did not really need one. The walls of Constantinople and later Istanbul were amongst the most powerful defensive mechanism there were. They were only preached 2 times and the Turks in reality had the luck to fight against a Constantinople at its death bed. (they even gave them the chance to surrender 3 times).
But were in Christian cities there is a bell in Muslim cities there is a Muezin. Back then it was not - as it is sometimes today a loudspeaker and recorded tape but a true person.
Q: Will my wife be allowed into Istanbul night clubs and other places if she is wearing a head scarf?
To answer the question almost all of you raised, what if I like to go to nightclubs and to drink, does that mean she has to stay in the hotel room? Just because she covers her hair does not mean she can't go have fun with her husband, does it?
A: Headscarf ban only applies to government buildings. Everywhere else it's allowed.
Q: I am following the Weight Watchers program and was wondering where to find WW products in or around Istanbul.
A: most would have to be puchased upon joining the program aloth there are normal grocery stores that do sell the products.
go to your major chain grocery store and take a look in the frozen foods.
healthy choice ,lean cusines also are similar in product.
Q: I will probably stay in any of those universities the next year for one month, for an exchange program.
I would like to know how those dormitories are, I mean, If they are comfortable, clean and for one person or two. I would also like to know if they separate girls and boys, and what services they have.
Thank you very much for your help!
A: it looks like nobody saw anything on answers.
call the school and tell them to send you a booklet to your current location... make sure you see enough pictures before you decide... good luck
