Cost of living & opportunity in Denver?

Q: Born & raised in NYC, been in Las Vegas for almost a year, now considering Denver. How much do the little things cost? Cigarettes? (Marlboro) Gas? A typical McDonalds #2?

I've already seen from craigslist the prices as far as apartment rentals. How much is the starting wage for waitresses/bartenders? In NYC it's like $4, in Vegas $7, how about Denver?

My fiancee and I also own an Entertainment company... we host Kid's Night at Restaurants (Character Costumes, Clowns, Balloon Animals, Face Painting) & Karaoke/DJ Services, Mobile Parties, etc.... Is there a lot of competition out there? Do you need more family-fun entertainers?

Lastly, will our new neighbors find the New York accent interesting and be welcoming of us, or am I going to be the town outcast if I sport my Yankee hat out in public?

A: I was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama and moved to Denver in March of this year. So far, I have found it to be very agreeable. Rent is about the same as, around 530-600 for an average 1 bedroom apartment. Cigarettes and McDonald's appear to be the same as well. I smoke Camel lights, I pay 5 - 6 for a pack depending on the gas station.

There are plenty of opportunities for experienced servers available. I was offered a job at a Chili's within a week of moving up here, ended up quitting because it just wasn't for me, then I found and was offered employment at 5 different restaurants before I settled on a offer of employment as an office manager with an arborist. As for wage rates, waitresses make $4.25, bartendering may be better. Much better than my $2.13 in Alabama! :) With ski season approaching, I suggest you look into the resort areas if you don't mind a hefty commute (1.5 hr from Denver), Keystone and Breck are the closest world class resorts.

I don't know anything about the entertainment industry, but I agree with the poster above that times being what they are, it may be difficult to break in.

And your accent? Y'all aint got nothing to worry about, my drawl hasn't drawn much extra attention. lol. From what I can tell, and what I noticed checking ID's while serving, most people are transplants. It's a melting pot here, I say come on! I love it!

Also, I openly support one of the most hated teams in NCAA history, The University of Alabama. I receive minimal harassment for it. : )

Ok, overall Denver is not much different than Vegas 1.5% cheaper to maintain same standard of living.

Denver compared to Brooklyn is 44% cheaper to maintain the same standard of living.

The biggest difference you will notice is cost of a home.

The Entertainment industry is hurting everywhere. With nationwide unemployment at 10%+ people are cutting back on events and parties.

What would Mr. Heston say about all of this?

Q: The following is an excerpt from a speech made by Charlton Heston, of the NRA, at an NRA convention in Denver, Colorado, on May 1, 1999. This was about 2 weeks after the massacre at Columbine high school.

I see our country teetering on the edge of an abyss. At its bottom brews the simmering bile of deep, dark hatred. Hatred that's dividing our country politically, racially, economically, geographically, in every way.

Whether it's political vendettas, sports brawls, corporate takeovers, or high school gangs and cliques, the American competetive ethic has changed from "let's beat the other guy" to "let's destroy the other guy." Too many are too willing to stigmatize and demonize others for political advantage, money or ratings.

The villification is savage. This week, Rep. John Conyers slandered 3 million Americans when he called the NRA "merchants of death" on national television, as the First Lady nodded in agreement. A hideous editorial cartoon by Mike Peters ran nationally, depicting children's dead bodies sprawled out to spell N-R-A. The countless requests we've received for media appearances are in fact summons to public floggings, where those who hate firearms will predictably don the white hat and hand us the black.

This harvest of hatred is then sold as news, as entertainment, as government policy. Such hateful, divisive forces are leading us to one awful end: America's own form of Balkanization. A weakened country of rabid factions, each less free, and united only by hatred of one another.

In the past ten days, we've seen these brutal blows attempting to fracture America into two such camps. One camp would be the majority - people who believe our Founders guarenteed our security with the right to defend ourselves, our families and our country. The other camp would be a large minority - people who believe that we will buy security if we will just surrender these freedoms.

This debate would be accurately described as those who believe in the Second Amendment, versus those who don't. But instead it is spun as those who believe in murder, versus those who don't. A struggle between the reckless and the prudent, between the dim-witted and the enlightened, between the archaic and the progressive, between the inferior citizens and elitists who know what's good for society.

But we're not the rustic, reckless radicals they wish for. No, the NRA spans the broadest range of American demography imaginable. We defy stereotype, except for love of country. Look in your mirror, your shopping mall, your church or grocery store. That's us. Millions of ordinary people and extraordinarypeople - war heroes, sports idols, several U.S. presidents and yes, movie stars.

But the screeching hyperbole leveled at gun owners has made these two camps so wary of each other, so hostile and confrontational and disrespectful, that too many on both sides have forgotten that we are, first, Americans.

So, when we take our 1st Amendment, and replace it with the 2nd Amendment while discussing a virtually identical issue to the Mosque in Manhattan...what is the result?

The full content of the speech can be found here:
http://www.thelandofthefree.net/historicdocs/charltonhestonnra1999.html

A: Heston was a gun-nut absolutist, nothing in his mind was beyond the reach of a rifle with it's sights set on making another bleeding-heart liberal die for the sake of trigger-happy me-firsters.

If you're scared of something or something scares you because it looks different, shoot to murder first, then make up excuses later to weasel out of taking responsibility for being a trigger-happy psycho gun-nut.

These kind of people would gladly shoot anyone if they could manipulate the semantics of a right to defend oneself vs. the implied self-appointed right to dispatch anyone who disagrees with them.

By twisting the 2nd amendment and ignoring references to a "well-regulated militia" the intent of allowing militias the right to bear arms without having to go to an armory first is constantly taken out of context to suit a political convenience of associating gun ownership using the absurd litmus test of regressive contradictory nonsense.

Denver the Giraffe is a fighter

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) – Denver the Giraffe continues to fight for her life as her body beings to suffer the after effects of eating a toxic plant.

The Reid Park Zoo Curator of Education, Vivian VanPeenen says the 23 year old giraffe survived the poisoning. Now the challenge is whether she'll survive the damage and stress her organs suffered.

"We like seeing eating giraffes. They need to be eating constantly. We like to see her digestion moving and her other bodily functions being what they should be. We are seeing that occasionally but not as consistently as we need to to assure that she is in good health," she says.

Denver's companion Watoto died almost immediately after eating oleander leaves feed to both of them by a zoo apprentice earlier in the week. The mistake is prompting an investigation on protocol and procedures.

Those visiting the zoo Sunday got a rare glimpse of Denver since the poisoning. Zoo keepers let her out for a few minutes.
