Q: I'm volunteering in Cape Town and my housing and 2 meals a day are paid in the cost. However, I need to bring extra spending money for dinners and going out and whatnot. However, I don't know how much extra I should bring.
A: How much money you need will depend to a large extent on your lifestyle. Eating out and entertainment are always high-cost items and if you will be doing this regularly you may need much more than if it is an occasional treat.
Since all of your housing and meal costs are covered you could probably get by reasonably on about ZAR 5000 per month- say US $ 700.
Q: I am a student planning on spending a semester studying at the University of Cape Town. English is my first language (being an American) and I intend to study Afrikaans while in South Africa as well. But I am very interested in volunteering in less privileged parts of the Cape and am wondering which would be the more useful language of isiXhosa and isiZulu. I want to be able to connect and communicate with the poorer citizens of the area in their first language, instead of the more common languages of their historical oppressors.
A: Xhosa is predominantly spoken in the Cape. Zulu is mainly spoken in Kwa-Zulu Natal, on the east side of the country. So you will be doing well learning a smidgen of Xhosa. And will earn a lot of respect from the people if you can speak a few words of their language. You will find that most of the people also can speak some english and afrikaans, and even one or two more of South Africa´s eleven official languages. The Cape Coloureds speak mainly Afrikaans, but more and more are adopting english as their home language.
A little tit bit on interesting things:

Q: I'm searching for hotel in Cape Town to stay in Nov. for reasonable price and not too dingy...a and safe area?
A: I've not been to Capetown but since it been nearly a day and you've not had a reply I suggest you check out a guidebook for good/safe areas.
http://www.hotels.via.us.com/City/Cape_Town.htm lists over 400 Capetown hotels and allows you to restrict your search by distance from whichever of 40 Capetown districts you specify - so you will be able to restrict your search to any area you like. Check maps pictures and reviews for the hotels.
N.B. it compares prices offered by major hotel chains plus the big travel sites like Laterooms and Hotels.com and you book direct with the one you choose.
Hope this helps
