How crazy would I have to be to drive to Belize?
Q: You're probably not going to change my mind, I'm just looking into how nutty this is perceived to be.
I've had this idea for some time now. I have in-laws who've done it from CA, but people have told me how dangerous it would be. I've driven my car in three different countries and I want to make Belize my fourth. What I want to do is start out up in Vancouver, BC and drive all the way down the Pacific coast, through San Diego, and Tijuana then across Mex Hwy 2, then down to the Yucatan then to Belmopan in Belize in a VW Golf.
Any alternate route suggestions?
After this, perhaps, Alaska to Panama (distant future).
A: considering Mexico is in the midst of a war between drug cartels, & kidnappings are not uncommon, especially of gringos, I would postpone this trip until things have quieted down. Pursue an alternate drive. Mexican friends of mine have been stopped on the highway & had to give up a pay off in order to continue. & these are Mexican nationals. Terrifying experience. Plus when I drove thru Mexico they did not have unleaded, & several gas stations ran out of gas & I had to wait a day or 2 for a delivery.

i would be careful central america is like the wild west so if you go try going with someone that knows the place or better yet go by plane

You definitely want to be careful driving through Southern Mexico. Once you reach Belize, the country is very safe aside from Belize City, which should be avoided at all costs. You'll need Mexican auto insurance, and I believe Belizean auto insurance as well. For real, watch out for Southern Mexico and BC. Very dangerous gangs. Other than that sounds like fun!

As far as driving in Belize City, I have driven both there and in Vancouver. Belize is easier than downtown Vancouver. However, I wouldn't even consider crossing any part of Mexico right now with all of the drug war killings and bloodshed going on.
