How expensive is Acapulco, Mexico compared to U.S.A.?

Q: For example; how much is an average meal at a restaurant? A soda (1 -1.25 here)? A drink at a club? I'm trying to estimate how much money I should take with me for a week.

A: Get out of the tourist zone for your meals - It's authentic GREAT Mexican food as well. Don't have to travel far off the Costera - just walk up a side street and pick a street vendor. Tacos , Torta's , Picada's , enchillada's - A full meal deal and a drink - About 3 bucks.
Corona's are 15 - 20 pesos - say 2 dollars US. Bring the bottle back where you bought it from for a deposit. 2 empty bottles equals 1 free beer :)
If you buy your beer at Oxxo ( convience store ) ice is free :)
McDonald's , KFC - same price as US.
Transportation - The blue bus's run the length of the costera - hop on anywhere , hop off anywhere - cheaper than taxi.
If buying from street vendors for merchandise ( not food ) BARGIN with them - start at half what they want - be prepared to walk before he will agree - they are professionals !!!
Don't fall for the beggars on the beach , no matter how " poor " they appear - all have cell phones !
NEVER eat the food being sold on the beach - you have been warned.
If adventourous - head to Pie de la Cuesta. Just a little north of Acapulco. Catch the green bus at where the cruise ships dock - look at the windshield for " Playa Luces " on it. It goes ALL the way out to the Pie . It takes a good 45 minutes so be patient - take in the sights of the real " Acapulco " - not many tourist actually see what it truely is .Go past the Military base and he will kick you off as he is turning around. Middle of nowhere Mexico on a killer deserted beach. HUGE waves - do not swim !!! Grat deserted beach. Walk south, head up an ally way to the street and grab a beer. Wait at a bar for the green bus when you want to head home.
Here is my flicker link , also have a Pie de la Cuesta section as well.

Basically - I know the in's and out's of Acapulco - I could have stupid fun on $50 USD a day. You could plan for about $75 a day and have a blast. Oh yeah - DO NOT use dollars here - exchange at any bank. Also may be hard to convert pesos back to dollars at home so plan accordinglly.

If you go by the advice of regular travelers or people who live there like Mikey you can find terrifically inexpensive restaurants in Acapulco. There are dozens and dozens of off the main road eateries where you could get a meal for 40-60 peso which equates to less then 3-5 USD.

Probably the best or most known club Palladium is an all inclusive for about 40 USD admission you have an open bar but DO expect to tip consistently to gain there attention. This is probably the best option for an affordable evening. Clubs like Baby O will set you back an arm and a leg and if your looking to budget this is NOT the place for you. Ditto places like Zuntra and some of the newer upscale clubs....

You may even want to hit up D'Beach (Disco Beach) or Paradise for outdoor partying drinks are respectably priced some 4-6 USD and they do have an all inclusive as well I believe Friday evenings.

Bottom line there are 100's of places to eat/drink so price around a bit and if you wander 1 block off the Costera (main road) you are likely to find more inexpensive meal options and some of these places are real good too.

You could have a blast for 1000 USD but you could survive on 600-700 USD as a tourist who will be eating 2 meals, Snacks and boozing it up...It adds up....

Uuufff its really cheap. You can find many tacos restaurants for 3 or 4 dollars or even less. In a club you can drink 3 beers for the same price. For a week you can spend with the hotel 500 dollars at least.

    Your Answers:

Average meal at Toks, VIP or Sanbourns (all kind of like Denny's) about 60 pesos for most menu items.
Average meal in an off street dive (Tacos etc) about 30 pesos
Drink in a club or on the beach runs about 50 - 60 pesos (Top shelf and imported is more)
A beer any flavor 15 pesos on the beach and up from there in the bars.

Don't bring cash - just use an ATM when you get to Acapulco.

Most bars are a serious rip off especially on the Costera (main drag) they will screw you out of 100 pesos for a beer and this is a fact. Palladium is ok if you want to spend crazy money - you can get open bar for 500 pesos - though you will be drinking well for the night.

Don't believe what you see about 2 for 1 specials as it appears locals do not know what that means. What it generally means is that you pay twice as much for 1 so the other is not actually free.

is the sand in Acapulco white or brown?

Q:

A: It really depends from on which beach you are on...The beaches near diamante zone specificly Revolcadero is more of a powdery white and same goes for sunset beach in and around Pie de la cuesta.

The beaches in the main bay area are a bit more course and as well a bit darker some what of a contrast between white and brown. This due obviously to the lack of the more consistent pounding of the surf found more on the beaches that face the pacific directly whereis the bay does not get the same.

Definitely not white. Too much volcanic material. Yellowish, grayish, brownish mix.
  • Mikey says:
See for yourself ........It is a grainy brown really.

The only thing I can throw out there having only visited Acapulco is that it is the largest of the other 3 cities mentioned and has many more activities, Bars , Restaurants and other points of interest. Acapulco happens to be a city 1st and a tourist destination 2nd also different from the above 3...

The weather from Nov-April is almost perfect and generally much warmer then the cities north of her especially the ocean. All make a great visit if you want peace and quiet PV fits the bill and ACA for the night life for sure....

Spring break 2011 Cancun vs Panama City vs Acapulco?

Q: Ok so i've been to Cancun and SPI for spring breaks and both are pretty wild with Cancun definitely being the better of the two. i was wondering if anyone has experience with the above mentioned places DURING SPRING BREAK. not summer trips, not family vacays i mean SPRING BREAK. I am in college and i am looking for an experience similiar to my cancun and south padre island trips but i wanted to try a new spot. I mean beaches that are PACKED with partying spring breakers all day and clubs that party all night. i've heard PCB is the business but i want to make sure its not just another SPI. anybody been to two or more of the above mentioned places that can give me lowdown?

A: Answers:
Panama City has oil on the beach. Weather is typically in 50 & 60 degrees anyway at night. Still, people will go because its cheaper than a flight and it's close to major metro (east coast) cities. No MTV either anymore, 2nd year of that

Cancun: Perfect mix of amazing beaches & good night clubs. Shopping can't be beat. Water is clear to 100 feet of depth. With the downturn in the economy, Cancun right now is 100% THE best buy for spring break. $1000/person for all inclusive with a flight/hotel/transfers & all meals & drinks when you consider your FULL budget for the vacation is a steal! Look at the Barcelo Costa all inclusive or of course the venerable Oasis Cancun for good pricing. I highly recommend ONLY looking at all inclusive as food/drinks is where they gouge you out as they can't fill rooms without stupid low prices.

Acapulco: The death quell is sounding...travel there for spring break was down 75% vs. the year before (2010 vs. 2009). There isn't enough people going for charters to fly, so it's just ultra expensive scheduled air flights. Safety is questionable as well. Clubs are amazing, but the question is...how many will be in them? The ocean /beach sucks. Beautiful, but strong currents and not that clean. If you don't have $1500/person really...don't go. Then you need another $300 for a party package...not many students have that kind of money for a week of drinking. On the low end for hotels, the Copacobana Beach all inclusive (still about $1400/week with 4 in a room) and it's a 3 star like a Holiday Inn inside, food kinda sucks. The old Hyatt is great, but SUPER expensive. If you have the money do the Crowne Plaza. Only go here on All Inclusive, too expensive otherwise.

I've been to all of them, we market & sell all of them as well. Cancun is the #1 travel destination in Mexico for a reason...it's THAT much nicer than everywhere else.

Questions email me the advice is free whether you book with me or not. chad@inertiatours.com

Should I eat it or will I get sick?

Q: I bought an enchilada plate at Acapulco the other day and only ate half of it at the time so I took the rest to go. It was about 80 degrees in the car and took an hour to get home. It's been in the refrigerator for 30 hours. Should I eat it?

A: If in doubt, throw it out..
