Here Comes Santa Claus. Really?
By: Maria King
Date: November 12, 2012
I was looking over the events this week and I noticed quite a few small town parades to welcome Santa. I checked and rechecked the list. I was thinking maybe I was wrong about the dates. I reran the searches again. No, it was right. How can this be? Can it be possible that the Christmas events are starting so early? Can it? Well it turns out that it isn’t really that early. I must have lost a few weeks somewhere. (No smart remarks out there like big surprise, lol). That means that Thanksgiving is about than 10 days away. Yikes!!!! I am so not ready. That also means that the shopping season is just about ready to begin as well. I heard that this year many stores are starting their Black Friday sales 5 days earlier. Does that mean in a week the crazy sales for Black Friday will be underway? Does that make them Black Sunday sales? I will choose not follow that thought any further as I am already confused. (Again, same smart remark reference from before).
I really like holiday traditions like these parades. I remember years of marching in the local Christmas Welcome Santa parades as a child. They are special, fond memories that I hold dear today. I marched in those parades as a girl scout because civic and other groups comprised most of the parade participants. I grew up in a very small town and it was wonderful to see almost the whole town come out on these occasions.
This week I am inviting you to start your Christmas season off not with shopping, but with some pre-Thanksgiving parades. They aren’t early. In fact they are right on time. If you can start a tradition this holiday of visiting a parade near you before Thanksgiving and set the tone for fond memories of your own; ones that do not begin and end with trying to find parking spaces at a mall. So grab the kids, grandma and maybe even the family dog who can sometimes attend public parades, and get out there and welcome both Santa and the season. If there are no parades on this list in your backyard, please use the search box and find some terrific welcome Santa events near you.

Hug a Veteran This Week
By: Maria King
Date: November 4, 2012
I really should have said hug a veteran and active duty person every chance you get, not just this week. Through the years and wars America’s Veterans, while they were active duty members, have answered the call. There has been a lot of focus on the presidential election and rightly so. Just think that this and all of our elections were made possible by our military personnel. Do not ever forget the fact that military personnel are not only willing to give their life for their country but they give up their lives. The sacrifices are more that being on the front lines. They include separation from their family and friends, being away from the U.S and all of our lifestyle creature comforts and they sacrifice financially as military personnel traditionally are paid no where near what they could be making in the general workforce. So why do they do it? Because they feel it is important and worth whatever it takes to make sure that we continue to have free elections along with our all of our freedom. And as in previous years, I am making my pitch this Veterans Day for my readers to give consideration to making a difference in the lives of these wonderful Americans. Think about the difference they have made in yours. With the season of giving fast approaching, I wanted to ask you that if you are planning to give any donations this year, you seriously consider a donation to the USO. What they do is more than “Bob Hope” type shows. They offer a place for soldiers in transition at airports throughout the world, they deliver care packages to active duty men and woman all over the world, they have free pre-paid phone cards for frontline troops to call home, Mobile Canteens and USO2GO for remote locations to make deliveries and visits to our troops and much more. Also they spend a great deal of time focusing on bringing troops and their loved ones comfort and care. Two of their especially wonderful programs for kids are United Through Reading and The Sesame Street-USO experience. I encourage you to visit their site, www.uso.org, and learn more about these exceptional programs.
I know that times have been tough for so many people these past few years but I implore you to give the USO a look if you decide to make a charitable contribution this holiday season. Even a small contribution goes a long way. And when you think of the many sacrifices that these men and women have made and are still making, you might find it in your heart to say thanks this way.
As you read this, I am visiting Normandy France. It is a place I have always wanted to visit and I cannot think of a more appropriate destination around Veterans Day. As a show of support where ever you happen to be this week, hug a veteran and attend a ceremony, parade or festival in your area. Be sure to say, “Thanks”!

Did Someone Say “Art Show”?
By: Maria King
Date: October 29, 2012
Last week I mentioned that I like to attend art shows. They are a terrific opportunity to uncover hidden gems. So it seems this week, if you are anything like me, is your week. There are some wonderful art shows taking place all over the country. Maybe it is that the art is inspired by the beauty of the season. It could also be that maybe art shows are popular this time of year because of possible holiday gift ideas. I really am not sure the reason why but who cares what the reason? It’s a lucky time of year for us.If you have never been to a juried art event, I highly recommend that you make plans. These events feature regionally and sometimes nationally known artists in the art show community. The artists that apply are required to submit photos or examples of their works to an acceptance “jury” in order to get invited as an exhibitor. Everything the artist showcases must be original works. In almost every case, artists cannot have just a “sales” person at the booth but are required to be present as well. I love that fact that you can speak with the artist. You cannot imagine how much of an impact it will have on what you purchase when you get to meet the person that created it. Years ago, and we will not be discussing how many, I had an opportunity to meet one of my childhood heroes at a special artists’ reception. It was Chuck Jones. Every cartoon lover knows who Chuck Jones is and that he was the head animator and director of almost every Warner Brothers, Merry Melodies cartoon. The chance to buy a piece of art from the classic, “Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was heaven alone but to speak with Mr. Jones was a dream come true. He was generous enough take a photo with me and also wrote a personal note. Both framed with the artwork. It was a very personal connection for me to my childhood and meeting Mr. Jones along with hearing some stories about the productions was a fantastic experience I will never forget.
That personal connection is what these shows offer and what makes them so appealing to so many. The fact that you can speak with the artist gives you a better understanding of their work and maybe where the inspiration came from for him to produce. Imagine if when you paid a visit to an art museum filled with masterpieces, you could speak with the artist. How great would it be to speak with Michelangelo or DaVinci? Think of what you might ask or say given the chance. I for one would want to speak to Picasso for an explanation about certain pieces, lol. Anyway, I am not saying that you will meet the next Michelangelo at one of these shows, then again, you never know. I bet people who were alive at the time of Michelangelo, couldn’t imagine that he would become known as one of the greatest artists of all time.
As always, the events listed here are from all over the U.S. to be used as a guide to what is going on this week. Use the search box above to find things going on in your area. Get your “eye for art” out, grab a fellow art lover and get to an art event this week. (And no cracks about why my childhood hero created cartoons, lol. It’s a tale of misspent youth).

BOO-levard of Fun Events for Halloween
By: Maria King
Date: October 21, 2012
Ok I apologize for that title but I didn’t want to do Spooktober, Howl-o-Ween, Fright Night etc, etc, etc. It might not be great but at least it’s original! Can anyone guess where a holiday that features free candy at every front door in the U.S. ranks on my “favorite” holiday list? LOL well you might think at the top but not really. There are a lot of food centric holidays and it really hard to pick just one.
My affection for Halloween encompasses more than just my love of candy. ( I want to make it clear however I am not discounting that part, just bypassing it for this blog) It is just that I was always a little disappointed in my costumes as a kid and it wasn’t until years later that I realized they were, in fact, really great. Few things are more fun then watching kids parade the streets Trick or Treating wearing their favorite super hero, cartoon or Disney character costume. My costumes were always custom made because my mom is a seamstress. I always envied those kids who could be anything they wanted by going to Woolworths and getting a costume in a box with a mask. I was always limited by what few selections were available in the McCall’s pattern books. Also I never had a really cool mask. Just a smaller version of the one the Lone Ranger wore. But looking back I realize that my mom spent more time and money doing it that way and they really were quite wonderful costumes. I guess I was just too young to appreciate them. Today homemade costumes are all the rage. Who knew? My mom, the trend setter!
The events that I have chosen this week are all excellent examples of Halloween fun and fright. I tried to mix up the variety with a few parades, some scary attractions and some festivals. Most are wonderful fun for the whole family but please check the descriptions or call ahead before you assume that it is family friendly. Halloween after all is a “scare”fest and some attractions might be too much for children and some of us adults! And then others are geared for a more “adult” crowd because of some outrageous costumes so beware. As always, these events are some great examples of what is taking place this week all around the country. You can use the search box above to find out what events are taking place in your backyard so you can enjoy the holiday. Why not grab your ghosts and goblins and have some “spooktacular” fun? Oops, sorry, that just sort of slipped out.
Oct 19, 2012 – Oct 28, 2012

Possibly a Few of Your Favorite Things
By: Maria King
Date: October 14, 2012
Last week I mentioned the Hershey Car Show as one show tailor made for car lovers. It occurred to me that there are a bunch of events taking place each week that focus on things people love. That’s what makes the event selection process so much fun. We all know that I love food and therefore food events. But lesser known is that I like to walk antique shows and art shows for some great finds which I have purchased over the years. Events can be something for everyone or can be something special someone really loves to do. Although I always advise people to experience all different kinds of events, this week I am going to highlight some events and who should/will attend and why. There are the Jacksonville Sea and Sky Spectacular Jacksonville, FL and the Amigo Airshow in El Paso TX, for people who love to see planes both on the ground and in the air. The Petit Le Mans in Braselton, GA and the Head of the Charles Regatta Cambridge, MA for people who love racing. They feature world class cars at the former; world class sculling at the latter. In Daytona Beach FL this week is Biketoberfest for people who like to ride or gaze at motorcycles. I have been to this event and it’s perfect for bike lovers. In Fort Lauderdale this week is one of the very best art shows all year the Las Olas Art Fair for people who love creative, original and current artists. There is the Stone Mountain Highland Games event in Stone Mountain, GA for those who love all things Scottish and Oktoberfest in Tulsa OK for those that love all things German. Also, let’s not leave out the Texas Jazz Fest in Corpus Christi, TX for those that love jazz.
I know you have been waiting so here they are; food events! If you happen to be in Circleville OH and you love pumpkin pies (over 23,000) and pumpkin donuts (over 100,000) you won’t want to miss the Circleville Pumpkin Show. If you can’t make that event, there are many other food events. How about the East Texas Yamboree in Gilmer, TX? That is, if yams are your thing. Personally I love um! Another option is to head to Chatsworth NJ if you love everything cranberry. They host their annual Cranberry Festival where the harvest is in just in time for the holiday season.
And finally, for all of you who remember when your mother used to ask, “If all of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump?”, this week you can say “YES”. That’s because it’s time for the annual New River Gorge Bridge Day in Fayetteville, WV. It is one of the biggest B.A.S.E. jumping events of the year. Thousands of people are leaping off the bridge and I think it’s for the thrill, not to spite their mothers. However, I could be wrong.
As always, this information is to give you some things that are taking place all over the U.S. to get you excited about events this week. I know I mentioned that these events are for people who love certain activities but really any and all of these are great events for everyone. So I think that you need to grab someone you love and find out what event themes work for them. Then use the search box above and find some terrific events in your area this week.

I saw a show in Hershey PA this week and I got so excited. You know, “the sweetest place on earth”, “Hershey Park Happy, “Chocolate Town USA. All of you know how phrases like these get my attention. But the real like here is cars not candy. The Hershey Car Show is the Grand-Daddy of them all for people who like cars; I mean love cars. This show features lots of cars, parking lots of cars. And an added benefit is that, if you attend the Hershey Car show some of that candy might find its way into your shopping bags.Well I know that you think I am all about food, which would not be an incorrect statement. But food festivals are my favorites not only because they feature food, but because they are really great event themes. In my travels, I like to eat at local food places. It gives me a chance to experience local food the way that locals eat. That is one of the reasons food festivals are so great and why I love them. The popular food of the area is out for all to see and eat. And other local “side” dishes add to the color like music, dancing art, etc. This week there are some excellent examples going on around the U.S. The National Shrimp Fest in Gulf Shores AL, the Gumbo Festival in Bridge City , LA, the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville, the Apple Butter Festival in Grand Rapids, MI and the Rice Harvest Festival in Katy, TX, just to name a few. Each of these is a good time to eat your way through an afternoon while soaking up the local culture.
In the category of “other” there are a few really great events; The Antiques and Collectibles Show in Atlantic City, NJ, the Hispanic Day Parade in NYC and the Richmond Folkfest in Richmond, VA. These are all wonderful examples of events following these themes and are a very good opportunity if these are your hobby or passion.
And as promised, I have a few more fall related events to feature this week, as well. The Way Out West Oktoberfest in Tempe AZ, the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay, CA, the Autumn Glory Festival in Oakland, MD and the Covered Bridge Festival in Winterset, IA.
As always, these events are for information about what is going on all around the US. I hope each week they inspire you to search what might be going on in your area that you can attend this week. Simply use the search box above to find terrific events in your backyard. So grab your family, friends or person(s) you love, and get to an event this week.

Autumn Leaves, The Sycamores….
By: Maria King
Date: September 30, 2012
Can you fill in the rest…..Moonlight in Vermont? If you got that right, then you are either a fan of great music or a lover of fall. As I mentioned in last weeks blog, over the next few weeks I will be highlighting events that are celebrations of that fabulous season, fall. The themes are derived from the season. Previously I discussed apple festivals, this week I showcase “fall” festivals. Now you have to wonder, what exactly is a fall festival?Looking over the weeks events, I am pleased to tell you that they sure have a ton of things happening one site. Lots of these events listed food and food courts as an important part. Food is always a necessary ingredient in the success of an event, in my opinion. (I heard that!) Many feature arts and crafts and I am talking 100’s of arts and craft people onsite selling, demonstrating and displaying their talents. Most include live entertainment. Not Uncle Bob playing the harmonica entertainment but regional and national talent. Also almost all feature special sections for children and children’s activities. These include crafts or petting zoos and also some have carnival rides. These are not just fall festivals to give people something to do on a Saturday afternoon. These are some of the biggest and best festival all year. As a matter of fact, I could have listed 100’s of events this week and barely scratched the surface of what is going on around the country.
And I also have a few honorable mentions this week. And the reason is that they are not really “fall festivals”, other than they take place in the fall. They include Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in Carlisle PA, the Chicago Marathon and Fleet Week in San Francisco. These are very highly regarded events and I mention them in case you happen to be in these areas, they are certainly worth the trip.
As always, these events represent some of the ways people will celebrate in the U.S this week. There may be many different ways that they celebrate fall in your area. You can find out more at www.eventcrazy.com. by simple using the search box on the home page to find fun things to do in your backyard. Whatever you do, get outside and enjoy the beautiful fall colors, weather and festivals.

Apple Festivals: Fall Foliage that is Delicious
By: Maria King
Date: September 23, 2012
Fall is just beginning and that means fall foliage is upon us. I love it. The fall is my favorite time of year. Of course that is a result of getting older. I wasn’t too crazy about fall as a child because it meant going back to school. But now I treasure it. The colors of fall are warm and comforting as nature puts on a spectacular show. When most people think of fall foliage they think of trees with red and orange leaves. But along with the turning leaves, Mother Nature also produces some very colorful fruits and vegetables. Let’s just imagine a farm market brimming with yellow, red and green apples and bright orange pumpkins. Few things are more colorful than fall fruits surrounded by leaves turning colors. So this week in honor of fall foliage, I decided to focus on that fabulous fall favorite, the apple. My research led me to the discovery that the apple is a fascinating little fruit that has a very storied history. Remember the story of Adam and Eve and that infamous “bite of the apple”, or William Tell and his famous “apple shot”? How about Sir Isaac Newton watching an apple drop in his orchard heading him to his work on gravity or Johnny Appleseed and the story of his planting apple seeds to make apple trees grow all across the U.S.. Apples show up in history just about everywhere. This fruit has significance in some of our familiar expressions and holidays as well. Just this past week on the table of every Jewish home, apples were dipped in honey on the first night of Rosh Hashanah to express hope for a sweet new year. They are also the main ingredient in the “all things American” expression, “Mom, apple pie and baseball”. They offer good health in the expression, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. In parental love where he/she is “the apple of my eye”. And who can forget the Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples. As you can see, apples seem to be everywhere in history and significant in daily life. I am quite surprised that when I took a good look at apples, they really are quite a-peeling. (ok you knew that would be in here somewhere) .
So remember that fall foliage can bring wonderful colors from the trees as well as from the warming colors of the seasonal fruits and vegetables. Fall is a terrific time to be outdoors and celebrating apple events is a perfect way to do just that. These events feature fresh, crispy apples, apple butter, pie, cider, cobbler, candy and caramel apples (a personal favorite of mine) and so much more. At this time of year, we have lots of apple related events. Coming soon we will be featuring pumpkin events and harvest festivals along with more apple related events. All of these are our way of celebrating that fall is upon us. As we move further into fall, I am sure you will be able to find many wonderful events that feature all kinds of things “fall” taking place in your backyard. Be sure to check the search box above for events that you can “fall” into this week. (sorry, last bad pun I promise). Grab someone you love and get out and smell the fresh air and seasonal beauty of fall.

Since 1968, the Apple N’ Pork Festival with its delightful aroma of smoked ham and spicy apple butter, has ushered in autumn for Dewitt County. From its beginning as a modest event, centered around a kettle of soup and stack of sandwiches, the festival has grown to one of the state’s favorite fall festivals. Sponsored by the Dewitt County Museum Association and held on the grounds of the C. H. Moore Homestead, the festival has provided the funds necessary to restore and maintain the large, Victorian-era house, barn and to erect the farm museum. The Apple ‘n Pork Festival has over 300 dealers in the flea market. There is an old-time crafting area featuring 19th century crafters demonstrating their dexterity and selling traditional crafted items. Free entertainment such as country bands to a Civil War Band, strolling musicians, face painting, and pony rides for little kids has been apart of the festival for many years. The festival’s food area features an endless array of choices of harvest-time foods. Enjoy apple cider floats the apple fritters, corn on the cob, grilled bratwurst, butterfly pork sandwiches, river rat potatoes, and ever popular ham sandwiches. The main attractions continue to be the ham and bean stand, selling over 6,000 servings; a bench and table area under a tent is set up for dining. Wear your comfortable shoes, and stroll along booth after booth of foods, crafts, antiques, entertainment. Museum tours, and more. Plan to spend the day! Tram and bus transportation to various sites provided for a small fee. Free admission to the grounds. Entertainment, flea market, pony rides, museum tours, craft area, and over 30 food booths.

We have had some fabulous weather here lately. After the terribly hot, dry summer we had this year it is finally a pleasure to be outside. So, in celebration of the beautiful blue sky I decided this week to highlight some skyward events. I want to highly recommend air shows to you. I have had many hours of joy over many years attending them. My appreciation stems back to the days of taking my young children who were fascinated with airplanes to not too long ago with friends on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. It’s wonderful to soaking up both the sunshine and the air show at the same time.I have attended many of these over the years and I have never been disappointed, unless of course it rains, sigh. But looking skyward today, I cannot even think of rain. One of my favorite stories of air shows I have attended is the Chicago Air and Sea Show. Many years ago, and I will not go into exactly how many, I was in Chicago for this show. Our team was all staying in the McCormick Hotel right along Lake Michigan. It was not only beautiful, it offered magnificent panoramic views of the Chicago skyline and the waterfront. While there, one of our crew became ill so I decided to keep them company and we watched the show from the hotel. From our vantage point, jets literally flew right by the windows. I am sure they would have flown through the room had the windows been open. It was a spectacular experience. Short of being a pilot in the cockpit, was the best seat anyone could ever have at an air show.
I also added two events to slow things down a little; two really great hot air balloon events. Unlike the high speed of jets at the air shows they float more then they fly. Gliding along like colorful and graceful eagles, they signify to me, skyward adventure in exquisite slow motion.
Either way you go, fast and furious or slow and graceful, you cannot go wrong this week with the adventures in the sky. I know that this time of year, you will enjoy getting out and participating in events of all kind this week. If there isn’t anything on this list in your area, please use the search box above to find events in your backyard! No matter what you do, make sure you share it with someone so you can make great memories together.

Dinner, of Sorts, at Events This Week
By: Maria King
Date: September 3, 2012
Being the super observant person that I am, I found an interesting pattern emerging from the events this week. And just so you do not think it was my love of food causing the pattern to emerge, I want to assure you that it was not. It seems, from the choices this week, one could make a casual dinner of sorts. It might not be Cordon Bleu but a case can be made for it being good old American fare. You will need to use your imagination just a bit to play along but here goes.First up we will start with a bowl of popcorn on every table to curb hunger while you wait. That takes us to the Marion Popcorn Festival in Marion, OH which features not only delicious popcorn but, a fabulous event as well. From there we move on to appetizers. I have chosen some fresh and yummy oysters from the Oyster Festivals in Asbury Park, NJ and Norwalk CT. If oysters are a little too much for you, how about some wonderful mushrooms any way you want them from the National Mushroom Festival in Kennett Square, PA?
Next let’s move on to the entree. I am getting hungry already. (no cracks from any of you). Well for the main course there is a choice of pork, from the Tipton County Pork Festival in Tipton, IN or sausage from the Saint Joseph Parish Sausage Festival in Vancouver WA. If you are into a lighter, healthier main course, you can always indulge at the Seafood Festival in Hampton Beach, NH or at the Seafood Festival and Power Boat Races in Pittsburg, CA.
How about a few sides? I bet you are thinking no way she has side dish events. Well guess what? I do. There is the Lenexa Spinach Festival in Lenexa, KS, the Clinton County Corn Fest in Wilmington, OH and the Posen Potato Festival Posen, MI. (what did you think I wasn’t going to back it up?).
And now, my favorite course of all, dessert. Since I presented a good deal of high fat, high sodium and high cholesterol main and appetizer courses, let’s look at some healthy alternatives for dessert. Not that I personally wouldn’t find a hot fudge sundae an excellent dessert choice, I think this meal deserves something a little lighter. So, how about a refreshing fruit salad? There is the Niagara County Peach Festival in Lewistown, NY, the Melon Festival in Winston, OR, the Grape Day Festival in Escondido, CA and the Watermelon Festival in Pardeeville, WI. Any and all of these events would be a terrific end to our yummy event “dinner” blog this week.
And when you are all finished, you can sweep up the mess with a broom from the Broom Corn Festival in Arcola, IL!!!!
If there are no “edible” events listed near you this week, use the search box above and find some delicious ways to spend some time eating at events in your backyard. Bon appétit! What am I saying? That’s too French. How about, “Come and Get it!”
Sep 08, 2012 – Sep 09, 2012

Eclectic Events for Labor Day
By: Maria King
Date: August 26, 2012
Ah, the Labor Day weekend celebrations. In many ways bittersweet, they are some of the best events of the year. This week I decided to showcase a selection of really big events under the theme “eclectic”. (no I am not referring to my home furnishing which I classify as eclectic because it is more polite then “early attic” ) These events are a group of many different types of events. And even though they do not have “Labor Day” in the title of the event, I can assure you that they are much anticipated Labor Day events. It is just that they do not depend on Labor Day to create their themes. These events could take place any other time of the year and stand on the merits of the event itself, not the holiday. There are two huge Jazz festivals this week, one in Detroit and one in Chicago as well as two Grand Prix events; one in Baltimore and one in Rock Island. I also found some other great events in the air; the Colorado Springs Balloon Classic in CO and the Cleveland National Air Show in OH. There is one on the sea, the Festival of Sail in San Diego and a few other events on land, Artsplash in IA, Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival in IN and Septemeberfest in IL.
Lots of food events! I know, you think I must be doing this because I love food (which I have never denied and often celebrate) however it is because there really are great food events this weekend. How about I prove that it isn’t just because I like food but that it is really because of the fabulous food events? Well there is Taste of Colorado, the Marshall County Blueberry Festival, the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival, the National Buffalo Wing Festival, there is the Sweet Corn Festival and also the National Sweet Corn Festival. (you know the line from that song… I’m as corny as Kansas in August. Obviously corn is big this time of year). All in all it is a spectacular array of events this week.
As always, if there is nothing on this list your area, please be sure to use the search box to find things going on in your own backyard. And do not forget to call ahead and check if there have been any cancelations as there are some weather related changes coming at the time of this writing. Based on my own recent weather related cancelation experience, I hope you will heed my advice even though I did not. Don’t forget to do the most important thing, grab someone you love and have fun!!

Last Hurrah of Summer
By: Maria King
Date: August 19, 2012
This is the last weekend before the unofficial end of summer on Labor Day weekend. Even though there is still 3+ weeks left of summer according to the calendar, we think of the end when the kids go back to school and vacations at the beach and summer camps are finally over. Most college students are back on campus by now. It’s a sad time for the kids, great time for the parents (sorry kids). As always, we Americans are never ones to let an occasion go without a party or some sort of recognition. This week, we have some very large, very established events that are kind of like the recent Olympic Closing ceremonies. We send off the summer season in style.
I wanted to shy away from Fairs as a category included here, even though some of the largest fairs all year take place the last few weeks of August. I tried to find events that fit into a few other categories this week. Again this week, just like last, there are a few ethnic festivals that make the list; The Oakland Chinatown Streetfest in Oakland CA, the Peachtree Latino Festival in Atlanta, GA, Festa Italiana in Portland OR and one event that blends a bunch, Festival of Nations in Saint Louis, MO.
In addition there is an air show, Great State of Maine, in Brunswick (I will let you guess what state, lol), there is a corn festival, DeKalb Corn Festival in DeKalb, IL and two car themed events, Corvettes at Carlisle and the 28th Street Metro Cruise Car Show.
The big winner this week of over riding theme is art shows. I have been trying to figure out what about the end of summer signals art festival, but I am stumped. Could be that summer is the time when great art is created and the end of the season is when it is sold? That sounds ridiculous even for me. Nonetheless, this week there are quite a few huge art themed events. Anyone of which not only features artists with terrific talent but, also have lots of great other things to offer as well.
I am sure that there is a great selection of events taking place in your area this week to send “summer’ off in style. If none of these on this list are near you, take a moment to use the search box above to find events taking place in your own backyard. Most of all, grab someone you love spending time with and do just that at a wonderful event this week.

We Celebrate Our Cultural Fabric
By: Maria King
Date: August 12, 2012
We are being bombarded these days about everything that is wrong with this country. I was thinking maybe this week I might write about something I have always felt was right about this country. Something that you see almost no where else in the world; blending of many cultures and ethnicities. My grandparents were immigrants. When I was a child, half of my relatives were born in Italy and spoke no English. I mean they thought they spoke English but trust me, they did not. I thought every family was exactly the same way. Maybe not all Italian but all of them having a collection of relatives that were new to this country.
Millions of people flocked here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And people come here to this day. We certainly have an excellent array of ethnic advantages because of this blending. Think about the simple task of going out to eat. The debate in my house isn’t about American food, like hamburgers and hot dogs, it’s usually an ethnic food conversation. Ok who wants Chinese food? How about deli, Mexican, sushi, French, Greek or Italian (I always vote no on that, doesn’t really feel like going out to eat for me, lol)? You get the idea. Something that we take for granted that is a value added of having all of this ethnic diversity. A true melting pot in deed!
So I say, let’s celebrate that fact. This week there are so many wonderful ethnic events to choose from, that you might have trouble deciding on which ethnic event to visit. I tried to highlight ones from different ethnicities so that you would get a pretty good sense of all that is going on around the country. Typically these are concentrated in areas with a long history of immigrants from that background. Many were started as a way to continue celebrations from their home country and have been ongoing for 100+ years. It was done to keep traditions alive and, I would assume, to also ease their homesickness. Whatever the reason, it is a valuable resource that we here in America have to share with each other.
I have listed some wonderful events that exemplify this melting pot. I know that these are not going to be convenient for about 90% of my readers to attend due to proximity. However, with a little searching, your chances of finding a great ethnic event near you this week are pretty good. Use the search box above to find some ethnic events in your backyard this week. Once you find one, grab the kids, grandma and the neighbors and head on over to a great time experiencing another culture through music, dance, art, food (you knew that was coming) and so much more.

It’s Blue Ribbon Season
By: Maria King
Date: August 5, 2012
This is the time of year where it’s corn dogs, turkey legs and funnel cakes. No, it is not my summer cookout menu, it is the fare at the fairs every summer. It is a fabulous reason to visit a fair just to sample it.
I liken fair food to a major day of binge eating. I mean seriously, if you thought about it would you really eat pizza, corn dogs, custard, kettle corn, snow cones and funnel cake and then ride on a tilt a whirl. If I asked if you would ever do that under normal circumstances, I am sure your answer would be no. But something happens to us when we get on the fairgrounds; we go crazy and eat everything we see with very few exceptions. Up and down every aisle, all through the midway and in and out of every building, we eat our way through the fair.
Fairs are also a great family way to spend the day or night because they feature lots of fabulous activities for young and old; games, exhibits, rides, entertainment and competitions. Some fairgrounds have race tracks for cars and motorcross, some have rodeo grounds while others have horse tracks. My personal favorite fair activity besides eating, is the food competitions (no element of surprise there, lol). Pie baking, jam and jelly making, floral arrangements, children’s artwork as well as beauty pageant, tractor pulls and so much more are only a small part of the overall package of contests.
Fairs are a little slice of Americana. It’s a looking glass into a simpler time and place in our history when people from all over would come to celebrate the bounty of the region. Also it is a chance to carry home the honor of a blue ribbon to boast for the whole next year.
This year, the country is deep in a drought and suffering through high unemployment. Farms and farmers are experiencing as rough a time as anyone. However fairs continue to take place, as they have for well over 100 years, to keep our precious traditions alive. Over all of those years, fairs have survived both good and bad times, war and peace, feast and famine. If you have a chance this week, try to find a fair in your backyard if none of the ones on this list are in your area. And remember all food at the fair is worth eating; just don’t eat ALL the food at the fair.

All I Can Say is WOW!
By: Maria King
Date: July 29, 2012
I tried to find an appropriate way to sum up this week’s events and it was difficult because the amount of events was so overwhelming. We are at the height of event season, and there are so many fabulous events to choose from it is dizzying. Every category is exploding; car shows, art events, food festivals, fairs, ethnic events, music events etc. I wrestled with themes and played with cute ideas and I just kept coming back to one undisputed conclusion, WOW!
This week the selections were so great that some are wrapped inside of an even bigger event; like a nice surprise. The first of these is the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival; a series of events celebrating the Class of 2012 inductees. Wrapped inside that blanket event is the HOF Rib Burnoff, a mouth watering rib eating experience. Next up is Seafair in Seattle; a wonderful series of events under that one umbrella. This weekend we highlight the Boeing Air Show and Albert Lee Cup Races. Held on and over lake Washington these events are the finale to the 6 weeks of Seafair.
Also up this week are three world famous music events. For the country music lover there is the WE Fest in Detroit Lakes MN. For the easy listening of jazz in just about the most perfect outdoor setting there is, we serve up the Newport Jazz Festival in Newport RI. And last but not least by any means, for the person who likes to listen to all types of music, there is Musikfest in Bethlehem PA. A 10 day adventure through every musical style you can imagine, Musikfest is a toe-tapping buffet for your ears and your soul.
This week has no shortage of world class art events either. There is the Fremont Festival of the Arts in (guess where?) Fremont CA, the Park City Art Fest in (guess where?) Park City UT, Anacortes Arts Festival in (guess where?) Anacortes, WA and the Amish Acres Arts and Crafts Festival in (guess where?) Nappanee, IN (got ya!). You had to know I was going to include at least one to see if you were paying attention. Well no matter where you thought they were, if you can get to any of these, you will have a great time and see some really great art.
I have two food events this week. I know, I can hear you all saying, only two? Yes well I do love food but there were so many great events this week, and I already have a rib fest mentioned earlier, I thought that I would stick with just two. They are the Maine Lobster Fest in (I am not going to ask) Rockland ME and the Carytown Watermelon Festival in Richmond VA. Of course it is possible that I am sneaking in two food festivals under ethnic events. You knew I could not make a list with only 3 food festivals. Ethnic festivals this week which are excellent representations of the culture they celebrate are the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in Bedford, MA which is a Portuguese celebration and the Dublin Irish Festival in Dublin OH.
And finally I have one catch-all event that has a huge selection of arts and crafts, multiple stages of musical entertainment and an enormous variety of great food. It is the 22 block street fair known as Decatur Celebration.
As always if there isn’t anything on this list in your area, use the search box above to find lots of wonderful events in your backyard this week. Be sure to get out there and have fun no matter “where” you go.

Fun, Funny and Just Plain Silly this Week
By: Maria King
Date: July 22, 2012
This week I am highlighting events near and dear to my heart, silly. Personally, I wanted to share some of my favorite silly events and event themes with you. Many will describe me as silly so maybe that is why I like them or maybe it’s just that I like to have fun. Some of these events took a slice of their hometown and made it golden. I love when people can take a negative and make it a positive. You know lemons into lemonade kind of thing. How about mosquitoes into a positive? I bet that is a new one for you. That is exactly what they do in Clute Texas. Every July they host the Mosquito Festival. Rumor has it that the original “mosquito” Willie-Man-Chew ( I love that name) decided it was a great place to settle. But celebrating mosquitoes is a stroke of genius for this town as this festival is consistently named a top event in almost every survey. The rest as they say is history and it looks like Clute is getting the last laugh.
Along with the Mosquito Festival another top rated festival this week is The Gilroy Garlic Festival. Ever eat Garlic Gator? I know where you can get some. How about Garlic Chocolate, Garlic Ice Cream or Garlic Jelly? If you would like to try it, grab your fork and head on over. It is a culinary overload of everything garlic and truly unique in the appreciation of this aromatic herb. Even if you do not care for garlic I assure you that you will enjoy this event.
This week we find lots of options. There is the Bologna Festival in Yale Michigan and the Hot Dog Festival in, are you ready, Frankfurt Indiana. Both of these events are super fun and make something special out of something with a real local connection. But not to be outdone, there is also a Hot Dog Festival in Huntington, WV. Also up on the schedule this week is the World Championship Cardboard Boat Races in Arkansas, and yes, most of them actually do float! The Nissawa Turtle Races in MN, a Pierogi Festival in IN, a Potato Festival in MI, Ding Dong Days in AR and National Day of the Cowboy in Sedona, AZ. When are they going to have the National Day for Harried Women Who Work Too Many Hours? I could be Grand Marshall of that Parade(if I could get the day off)!!!!
I have a few honorable mentions this week that aren’t silly themed but they sure are fantastic, do-not-miss, events. If you happen to be in the area where any of these will be taking place, be sure to attend. They are worth the trip on so many levels. The Pony Swim on Chincoteague Island in Virginia is an amazing event featuring beautiful horses and ponies in a strikingly beautiful journey. The Oswego Harborfest in Oswego, NY , the Bele Chere Festival in Asheville, NC, the Saint Ann’s Italian Street Festival in Hoboken, NJ and the Bellevue Art events in Bellevue, WA are all huge events that have been entertaining and supporting their communities for many years. I invite you, if you can get to any of these, to do it. You can thank me later!
As always, if none of the events that I recommend this week is geographically possible for you to attend, please be sure to use the search box above to find great events in your own backyard! Don’t worry about finding silly events a great time either. I have been doing it for years and never regretted my choices once!

Finding High Value at Events this Week!
By: Maria King
Date: July 15, 2012
I love a bargain! Who doesn’t right? A bargain is actually something of value; it is something with a much greater value than what you pay. So this week I thought I would bring you a list of events that are not only terrific events with huge attendance and lots of activities, but they are also a tremendous bargain and value. Each of them has free admission. There are some fees for certain activities and food, but you can spend a few hours enjoying the atmosphere and exploring the event without spending a nickel. That’s a bargain by any definition! One of the featured high value events this week is the Port Fish Days in Port Washington, WI, where they fry up the best fish and chips at any event west of London. They also do everything they can to keep the costs down. A family can actually afford to eat at this event for a very reasonable fee because a serving of Fish and Chips is $5.50 and a soda is only $1.50. Throw in the $3 concert entrance fee and that is less than going to a movie. With all the other amenities at the event you are looking at a real bargain.
Another food event that knows how to treat their attendees right is the Cincinnati Jazz and Ribfest. It features art vendors, multiple stages of entertainment, lots of food options, children’s activities and much, much more.
Next, if you happen to be in the Seattle area check out Bite of Seattle a culinary adventure of food along with many wonderful activities for young and old. And again, there is no entrance fee, you pay only for the things you want to buy or eat.
And in Maine this week there is the Yarmouth Clam Festival. I wonder what kind of food they serve there? I will clam up and let you all guess. (I know it was bad, even for me). Trust me this is a terrific event no matter what you eat there!
Some other events offering a great time, great fun and a great value this week are the River-Cade Festival in Iowa, the Fargo Street Fair in North Dakota, the Virginia Lake Festival, the Lehigh Valley Sportsfest in Pennsylvania, the Hillsboro Balloon Festival and Fair in New Hampshire, the Buffalo Grove Invitational Art Show in New York, the Roar at the Shore in Pennsylvania, the Saint Christopher Mid-Summer Festival in Indiana, Artscape in Maryland and the Ann Arbor Art Fair. In addition to being a great value for you and I these events can be a financial windfall for their communities. That’s a great thing about events, they can be a win-win for all concerned. The attendees get a great opportunity to have fun, to share experiences with their friends and neighbors and to showcase their area to visitors. Meanwhile the area businesses get to take a ride on the event coattails by having special sales, restaurant and hotel deals and selling event memorabilia. Just look at how much money was made from all those bobble heads of the royal family sold during the Queens Jubilee recently. They certainly impacted the bottomline of the merchants that sold them. I think they really should have had a new designer line of Queen pocketbooks myself but maybe it was too obvious. Anyway you get the idea. But equally important local charities can benefit from donations made by the events from event profits every year.
So in this sluggish economy, look no further than your own backyard for some real bargains at events this week. As always be sure to use the search box above to have some truly valuable fun!

Celebrate 30+ years of Local Reflection
By: Maria King
Date: July 8, 2012
It is normally not a good thing to get older in our youth centric culture. It is a different story as far as events are concerned. Everything this week has been taking place at least 30 years and in some cases well over 100. They show longevity and a well established base for sure. Events that have been around a long time have survived many tumultuous episodes in history, numerous administrative boards in charge and many changes in the mores of society. Yet they continue to be the glue that holds a community together. Maintaining traditions and history, while also allowing a town to move forward, is one of the primary purposes of an event. As events age, you don’t need to change the whole event but only adapt it somewhat. Even I have adapted as I get older. I still wear pants but I no longer wear hot pants unless I put them on right out of the dryer. Adapting is good! It is the same with events. To the credit of this week’s selections, adapting to change while maintaining their core idea is what these events have done to survive so long. One thing events do like almost nothing else however, is that they reflect the community where they take place. Events that we cover on EventCrazy are the life-blood of a community. They are a coming together to celebrate a common theme, interest or holiday. This past week we saw that with the July 4th events. Events, in many cases are the way that a community sees itself and the way they would like others to see it. Whether it’s antiquing in New England, a Folk music event in Ohio, an Art Festival in Missouri or any ne of the many we cover, they all have a definite local air about them. Whether it’s art, food, local heroes, religious traditions or just local history you cannot go wrong with any of these choices.
Think of selecting a local event as similar to selecting a restaurant. Why eat at the chain food places when the real flavor is local? Make sure you stop in to sample the local fare this week. Get out and experience the reasons why some of these events have lasted so long. While doing so exercise caution as I am sure that record breaking temperatures will be the norm again. Make sure you stay hydrated out there. I want you all to have fun, not get heat stroke. So grab your bottled water, a beach hat, sun screen and a friend and get out and see what events were like 30+ years ago. I am sure if nothing on this list in your area, a simple search will reveal wonderful options right in your own your backyard!
