Fred Krakowiak talks about his life as an artist and safari expert. For the last ten years Fred has taken a walking safari in the santuaries of South Africa. Learn about his adventures and tips if you would like to go on safari yourself. Find out what it’s like to stand in the mist of the world’s largest water falls, Victoria Falls. Listen as Fred talks about his last safari where he was just a few feet way from the watchful eye of a bull elephant.
About Fred Krakowiak Fred Krakowiak, author of Africa: An Artist’s Safari, is recognized as a leading wildlife artist as well as a safari expert. His artwork is commissioned internationally by both private and corporate collectors. He creates vibrant paintings of wildlife from Africa and across the world by capturing them in motion with unique techniques using mediums such as oil on copper and dye on silk.
Early on, Krakowiak realized his passion for painting as well as his genuine love for African wildlife. Blessed with the gift of an artist’s eye, he is able to detail every nuance of the animal’s very existence. With over twenty-five years of conventional study in various mediums including watercolor, oil, pen & ink and dye on silk, Krakowiak’s foundation has been his formal training in the ancient art of Sumi (pictures in ink). The fundamentals of Sumi require the artist to learn from their mistakes and often omit details. Krakowiak’s paintings illustrate that what is missing is as important as what remains. This skill allows viewers to become involved in the painting by filling in the missing details with their imagination and experience the power of action at that exact moment of passion.
Krakowiak’s book Africa: An Artist’s Safari is a narrative that chronicles his travels in Africa. He was inspired to capture African animals by his awareness that one day his artwork and stories may be all that remains of these majestic creatures. His appreciation and respect for the mysterious beauty of these animals and the land was the motivation for creating his beautiful book. Described as a “feast for the eyes” by the Virginia Quarterly Review, Africa: An Artist’s Safari was the recipient of the prestigious 2008 Ben Franklin Award for large format cover design.
“Jenn delivers on both performance and songwriting. Well mixed songs with enough of her own individual style to carry things off in a crowded musical market place.” BeeHive Candy 2011
About Jenn Bostic
“Love me, hate me/Leave or take me/Just don’t make me change” “Change”
Jenn Bostic’s career as a singer and songwriter began when she was 10 years old, in the back seat of her father’s car with her older brother on the way to school. A horrific crash that killed her dad, a hobby musician who taught her folk songs like “Sunny Side of the Street,” and turned her on to Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, changed the 25-year-old’s life forever.
“God must need another angel/Around the throne tonight,” she sings on “Jealous of the Angels,” a song on her second album, the follow-up to her promising debut, Keep Lookin for Love. “Your love lives on inside of me/And I will hold on tight.”
Born in Philadelphia, but raised in Waconia, Minnesota, a small town 30 miles west of
Minneapolis, Jenn grew up singing with her family around the piano. Her father, a CEO of NordicTrack, played a variety of instruments, including accordion, while his daughter picked up a love of folk, blues, R&B, soul, show tunes and, eventually, country. Seeing her father die in front of her made her angry with God at first, but she later found an outlet for her sorrow in music and writing songs.
“The first time I was able to sit down at the piano and play, I shut my eyes and honestly felt a presence next to me,” she explains. “I poured my heart into those first few songs. The only way I could connect and be with my dad was when I played music. And I still feel that way.”
Jenn went on to perform wherever she could, taking voice, piano and acting lessons, singing in choirs and school musicals. She would sit in with a local roots band, Traveled Ground, that consisted of teachers from her middle and high school, and once included her father on accordion.
She went east to attend the famed Berklee School of Music, where she honed her performance skills while studying music education, a field still vitally important to her.
“One day, I’d love to open up a ‘School of Rock’ type institution,” she says. “Just really give back by working with people who are as passionate as I am about music.” She also discovered country music, singing for a cover band called DiggerDawg, which opened for a variety of performers, including Alan Jackson, Josh Turner, Brad Paisley, Reba McEntire and Gretchen Wilson, as well as traveling to Iraq and Kuwait on an Armed Forces Jet.

TIP: Traveling to Washington DC and love music & food?
Mel says:
I’ve lived & worked in the DC area for nearly 15 years. She offered three tips, and she says, you have to visit three different venues:
1. If you like eclectic live music (Americana, bluegrass, country, rock), head to Hill Country Barbecue Market in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of DC. In addition to serving delicious TX-style barbecue, they offer live music 5 nights a week (most shows have no cover). Wednesday nights are their weekly Rock n Twang Live Band Karaoke night, so if you’ve ever wanted to be the lead singer fronting a live band, here’s your chance!
Hill Country’s website is: www.hillcountrywdc.com.
2. Leave DC and head out to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens. There’s an awesome interactive museum on the grounds that put the life of the country’s 1st President into new perspective. Bourbon/whiskey lovers will also enjoy the grounds, and there are some neat activities for kids.
More can be found at: www.mountvernon.org.
3. Finally, take a trip out to the National Air & Space Museum’s Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport which is home to a retired full-sized Concord jet and the space ship Enterprise (which was the prototype for the fleet of shuttles that were just grounded). Udvar-Hazy also will be the new home of the Discovery starting in spring 2012.
