Cruise Ship Expert Bruce Oliver, Cunard Commodore Status

###

Bruce Oliver, Cunard Academy Commodore Certified Expert

Local Travel Professional Becomes Cunard Voyage Expert by Earning Prestigious Top Rank in Cunard Academy

Las Vegas, Nevada (September 28, 2012) – An Enfield, Connecticut travel professional has achieved prestigious Commodore status in the Cunard Academy training programme, certifying him as a Cunard Line expert for booking travel on the company’s flagship Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and new liner Queen Elizabeth.  As a Commodore, Bruce Oliver of the Las Vegas’s Cruise with Bruce Enterprises joins an exclusive group of travel professionals who are now recognized by Cunard at the Academy’s highest level for their unique qualifications and knowledge as a voyage planning professional. Oliver earned this distinction after completing the minimum 25 courses necessary to graduate from the programme.

“We at Cunard are very proud of Bruce Oliver’s dedication, as he put in extra effort to offer clients exceptional knowledge regarding the legendary ocean liners of Cunard,” said Jan Swartz, Senior Vice President of Customer Service and Sales for Cunard.  “Travel professionals who reach this top level in our Academy programme have completed hours of course work to become an expert on the company’s legacy, traditions and unique voyage experience and can provide their clients the opportunity to be a part of an iconic Cunard travel adventure.”

Cunard Academy is the cruise industry’s most comprehensive online training programme available to travel professionals in the U.S. and Canada. Travel professionals who complete the extensive coursework become experts on a wide range of topics, offering travellers full knowledge of important details about a Cunard voyage aboard Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth.  Courses educate travel professionals on such areas as the line’s legendary Transatlantic Crossings and World Voyages, exclusive Grill accommodations, compelling enrichment programmes (Cunard Insights), world-class dining and renowned White Star ServiceSM .

“I’m thrilled to be a Cunard Commodore and expand my expertise about these iconic ships. The knowledge I’ve gained makes me a more valuable resource for my clients, and helps me to match a Cunard voyage to sophisticated travellers who seek the quintessential ocean liner experience. In May, 2013, I am also launching a series of Transatlantic Jazz Cruises on Cunard’s Queen Mary2 featuring Erin Dickins, MANHATTAN TRANSFER founder.” said Oliver.

To become a Commodore, travel professionals must fulfill 25 required and elective classes, representing approximately 15 hours of total course work covering worldwide destinations, on-board programmes, and customer service skills. As they complete courses, travel professionals earn their “stripes” through four levels: First Officer, Staff Captain, Captain and finally Commodore, and can continue to take elective courses to expand their knowledge and keep their Commodore status current.

Apple Festivals: Fall Foliage that is Delicious

By: Maria King
Date: September 23, 2012

Fall is just beginning and that means fall foliage is upon us. I love it. The fall is my favorite time of year. Of course that is a result of getting older. I wasn’t too crazy about fall as a child because it meant going back to school. But now I treasure it. The colors of fall are warm and comforting as nature puts on a spectacular show. When most people think of fall foliage they think of trees with red and orange leaves. But along with the turning leaves, Mother Nature also produces some very colorful fruits and vegetables. Let’s just imagine a farm market brimming with yellow, red and green apples and bright orange pumpkins. Few things are more colorful than fall fruits surrounded by leaves turning colors. So this week in honor of fall foliage, I decided to focus on that fabulous fall favorite, the apple. My research led me to the discovery that the apple is a fascinating little fruit that has a very storied history. Remember the story of Adam and Eve and that infamous “bite of the apple”, or William Tell and his famous “apple shot”? How about Sir Isaac Newton watching an apple drop in his orchard heading him to his work on gravity or Johnny Appleseed and the story of his planting apple seeds to make apple trees grow all across the U.S.. Apples show up in history just about everywhere. This fruit has significance in some of our familiar expressions and holidays as well. Just this past week on the table of every Jewish home, apples were dipped in honey on the first night of Rosh Hashanah to express hope for a sweet new year. They are also the main ingredient in the “all things American” expression, “Mom, apple pie and baseball”. They offer good health in the expression, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. In parental love where he/she is “the apple of my eye”. And who can forget the Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples. As you can see, apples seem to be everywhere in history and significant in daily life. I am quite surprised that when I took a good look at apples, they really are quite a-peeling. (ok you knew that would be in here somewhere) .

So remember that fall foliage can bring wonderful colors from the trees as well as from the warming colors of the seasonal fruits and vegetables. Fall is a terrific time to be outdoors and celebrating apple events is a perfect way to do just that. These events feature fresh, crispy apples, apple butter, pie, cider, cobbler, candy and caramel apples (a personal favorite of mine) and so much more. At this time of year, we have lots of apple related events. Coming soon we will be featuring pumpkin events and harvest festivals along with more apple related events. All of these are our way of celebrating that fall is upon us. As we move further into fall, I am sure you will be able to find many wonderful events that feature all kinds of things “fall” taking place in your backyard. Be sure to check the search box above for events that you can “fall” into this week. (sorry, last bad pun I promise). Grab someone you love and get out and smell the fresh air and seasonal beauty of fall.

Since 1968, the Apple N’ Pork Festival with its delightful aroma of smoked ham and spicy apple butter, has ushered in autumn for Dewitt County. From its beginning as a modest event, centered around a kettle of soup and stack of sandwiches, the festival has grown to one of the state’s favorite fall festivals. Sponsored by the Dewitt County Museum Association and held on the grounds of the C. H. Moore Homestead, the festival has provided the funds necessary to restore and maintain the large, Victorian-era house, barn and to erect the farm museum. The Apple ‘n Pork Festival has over 300 dealers in the flea market. There is an old-time crafting area featuring 19th century crafters demonstrating their dexterity and selling traditional crafted items. Free entertainment such as country bands to a Civil War Band, strolling musicians, face painting, and pony rides for little kids has been apart of the festival for many years. The festival’s food area features an endless array of choices of harvest-time foods. Enjoy apple cider floats the apple fritters, corn on the cob, grilled bratwurst, butterfly pork sandwiches, river rat potatoes, and ever popular ham sandwiches. The main attractions continue to be the ham and bean stand, selling over 6,000 servings; a bench and table area under a tent is set up for dining. Wear your comfortable shoes, and stroll along booth after booth of foods, crafts, antiques, entertainment. Museum tours, and more. Plan to spend the day! Tram and bus transportation to various sites provided for a small fee. Free admission to the grounds. Entertainment, flea market, pony rides, museum tours, craft area, and over 30 food booths.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a Mickey Mouse Balloon?

We have had some fabulous weather here lately. After the terribly hot, dry summer we had this year it is finally a pleasure to be outside. So, in celebration of the beautiful blue sky I decided this week to highlight some skyward events. I want to highly recommend air shows to you. I have had many hours of joy over many years attending them. My appreciation stems back to the days of taking my young children who were fascinated with airplanes to not too long ago with friends on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. It’s wonderful to soaking up both the sunshine and the air show at the same time.I have attended many of these over the years and I have never been disappointed, unless of course it rains, sigh. But looking skyward today, I cannot even think of rain. One of my favorite stories of air shows I have attended is the Chicago Air and Sea Show. Many years ago, and I will not go into exactly how many, I was in Chicago for this show. Our team was all staying in the McCormick Hotel right along Lake Michigan. It was not only beautiful, it offered magnificent panoramic views of the Chicago skyline and the waterfront. While there, one of our crew became ill so I decided to keep them company and we watched the show from the hotel. From our vantage point, jets literally flew right by the windows. I am sure they would have flown through the room had the windows been open. It was a spectacular experience. Short of being a pilot in the cockpit, was the best seat anyone could ever have at an air show.

I also added two events to slow things down a little; two really great hot air balloon events. Unlike the high speed of jets at the air shows they float more then they fly. Gliding along like colorful and graceful eagles, they signify to me, skyward adventure in exquisite slow motion.

Either way you go, fast and furious or slow and graceful, you cannot go wrong this week with the adventures in the sky. I know that this time of year, you will enjoy getting out and participating in events of all kind this week. If there isn’t anything on this list in your area, please use the search box above to find events in your backyard! No matter what you do, make sure you share it with someone so you can make great memories together.
