When do I need a Passport? | Passport Application | U.S. Dept of State Passport Application

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

U.S. Passport

When do I need a Passport?

Many question arise when we talk about traveling and cruising around the world including:

  • How do I get a new U.S. Passport?
  • How do I renew my passport?

Any time you travel or fly outside of the United States or a U.S. Territory (e.g. Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, etc) then you need a passport book. If you drive to Canada or Mexico then you can get a Passport Card.

Rules about Cruises: According the U.S. Transportation Security Administration or ‘TSA’ (Source: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_989.html):

U.S. citizens traveling to The Bahamas by sea on private watercraft or most commercial vessels must have a valid passport.  Those traveling by sea on an officially-designated “closed-loop cruise”, meaning that the port of entry is the same port as the port of re-entry upon return to the U.S.,  may enter using a passport, passport card, or other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document, however, it is prudent   to obtain a passport before travel in case of an unforeseen emergency that requires a cruise passenger to disembark and return by air.  (Please verify with your cruise line if your intended cruise is designated a closed-loop cruise.)   Travelers arriving via private watercraft are charged docking fees.

We strongly encourage all U.S. citizens to apply for a passport book or passport card well in advance of anticipated travel. You can call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on how to apply for passports. If you are planning on an extended stay, be prepared to present evidence of financial solvency upon entry to The Bahamas. Visit the Embassy of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas for the most current visa information.

Going on a Closed Loop Cruise? Why should you still get a US Passport Book?

  1. What if you do not get to the cruise ship and it leaves the U.S. Port? You will need a passport to fly to the first port that the ship will visit. NO PASSPORT, you miss the cruise.
  2. What if you don’t get back to the ship before it leaves one of the ports on the itinerary? You will need a passport to fly to the next port to catch up with the ship … After you spend a day at the US Embassy to get clearance to fly.
  3. What if there is a medical emergency and someone in your family has to leave a cruise early? You will need a passport to fly internationally.
  4. What if there is a problem with a ship and you need to get a flight back to the United States (Carnival Dream Cruise Ship Reports Problems In St. Maarten – Passengers headed to the airport Thursday instead of sailing home after an on-board generator problem halted their trip.) – You have to go to the US Embassy to get clearance and foot the bill yourself.
  5. Are you willing to take the risk?

The last question shouldn’t only be:

How do I renew my passport but when? The US Government requires passports to be valid at least six months after you arrive home from foreign travel or cruises. If the expiration date is June 30, 2015 then your vacation should arrive home prior to December 30, 2014. So I guess this means that a 10 year passport is only valid for nine and one half years and a five year passport is only valid for four and one half years.

Have passport FEES  gone up?

Current U.S. Passport fees are:

A) $100 to $135 for a new adult US Passport.

B) $75 to $110 for a renewal adult Passport for the United States.

C) $0 to $82 to add passport book pages. It is currently FREE!

Passport cards are cheaper, but have conditions:

A) Cards can only be used to travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda ONLY by land or sea.

B) To fly to these destinations you would need a regular passport book.

If you need to do anything with your passport, plan on at least applying for it in person or dropping it in the mail to beat any fee increases.  Government Regulation

National Passport Information Center toll-free at:

1-877-487-2778.

Do I need a passport to cruise?

YES, I would highly suggest that any time you visit any foreign country including Canada, Bermuda, and Mexico that you get a passport book just in case you miss your ship departure and need to fly out or back to meet it.

10 Myths About Travel Agents | Cruise with Bruce Enterprises | Travel Agent

10 Myths About Travel Agents

Cruise with Bruce Enterprises

Affiliated with ROVIA LLC an award winning agent resource

1.    Myth: All Travel Agents and Agencies are the Same

Fact: Every travel agent is different and has a different area that they specialize in. So, depending on what type of trip you are looking to take one travel agent will suit you better than another. That’s why it is important when planning a trip to find a travel agent that specializes in where you want to go. (NOTE: Check out my webpage for more info: http://www.CruiseWithBruce.com )

2.    Myth:  No One Uses  Travel Agents Anymore

Fact: Travel agents still sell 51 percent of all airline tickets, 87 percent of all cruises, 81 percent of all tours and packages, 45 percent of all car rentals and about 47 percent of all hotels.*

3.    Myth: Travel Agents are Trying to Cheat Me if They Don’t Quote Me the Cheapest Price

Fact: Travel agents know the ins and outs of different itineraries. While you might find one that is a little bit cheaper, that cheaper itinerary might involve a whole slew of headaches.  For example, longer waits at the airport and odd travel times.  A travel agent will be looking to get you the best value for you money spent which should include the most direct and time friendly itinerary they can find. – Unless you have told them you would prefer to have the cheaper options presented as well expect value to be a factor included in the trip they plan. (NOTE: The Best Value for the Dollar Spent is my motto. As the owner of Cruise with Bruce I always try to get my clients the best value for the buck. I want you to be happy with your vacation package and if you are not, you will be calling me or you will book with someone else the next time. Cheaper is not always better.  If you find a cruise or tour for less, please let me know and I will check it out to see if it is something I would recommend.)

4.    Myth:  It is Expensive to Use a Travel Agent

Fact: The fee a travel agent charges really depends upon the agent. While some of the more luxury agencies have higher fees, the average fee is quite marginal. Some travel agents will even drop the fee or offer a discount once you have finalized your trip with them. Plus, you can always ask an agent upfront what their fees are and decide for yourself if it’s worth it. Also, it is important to remember that a lot of online booking sites, such as Orbitz and Expedia, charge a booking fee as well. Cruise with Bruce Enterprises does not normally charge a fee to book anything but an air line. Book your airline tickets by clicking here.

5.    Myth:  I Can Easily Book the Same Trip on My Own Without Using A Travel Agent.

Fact:  Although travel agents have access to all of the same outlets you would use when looking to book travel, they also have access to exclusive pricing and package deals that are most times not available to the public. Your travel agent also has more leverage in helping out in situations such as hotels claiming to be booked, when in fact they may still have rooms available that are on hold for travel agents reservations. So when everyone else is telling you “No” your travel agent can help turn that to a “Yes.”

6.    Myth: Travel Agents Don’t Have Information as Updated as the Internet

Fact: Travel agents obtain some of their information from the same sources as online booking sites such as Orbitz and Travelocity. They also receive daily emails and faxes with new specials from resorts and hotels that may not be published on the internet. Travel agents can also call a place directly to see if they can work out other kinds of special deals for you, something an online site can’t do.

7.    Myth: Travel Agents Are a Waste of Time

Fact: Although you can find much of the same information that the travel agent provides for you on your own, you are going to spend a lot of valuable time doing so.  A travel agent can actually save you from hours of painful research and price comparison shopping.  They have up to date prices, hotel conditions, and interesting new activities. Their prior knowledge and experience gives them the upper hand in trip planning.

8.    Myth: Travel Agents Have Lost Their Clout

Fact: Travel agents book hotels, cruises, and activities every day. The companies that provide these services know that and want their business and will work to keep that business coming back. So while a place might be telling you “Sorry we are booked,” for your one time trip, they are more likely to make an acceptation for the travel agent to insure that the agent sends them more business in the future.

9.    Myth:  Good Travel Agents are Hard to Find

Fact:  While there are some below par travel agents out there, Bruce Oliver and Cruise with Bruce Enterprises is available to book your custom travel experience. For over 35 years Bruce Oliver has traveled and cruised to over 40 countries around the world. Check here for customized tours and cruises to: Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Paris.

10.    Myth:  Travel Agents Can Only Book My Flight and Hotel

Fact:  Travel agents can arrange car service, personalized tours and activities, in addition to all the basic travel services they provide. They are also excellent sources of information concerning good restaurants, good sites to see, and tips on what to pack. Cruise with Bruce Enterprises prefers not to book flights only. Traveling to the Northeast FEB 8-9, 2013? | Airline Ticket Policies | Rebook Air tickets

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Rebook Air Tickets

Traveling to the Northeast?

February 8-9, 2013

If so the airlines have begun posting notices on their websites for penalty free  changes.  The travel must be booked for dates as defined by each carrier and the reissue dates are very specific as well.  When this type of event occurs it is  impossible to get through to the airlines via phone calls.

You need to  click on  the carrier’s websites where you will be able to rebook new travel plans via  those websites.  You simply need to find the link on the carriers home page for  the announcement of the storms policy pages.  There will be a link on each for  the passenger to access and change your bookings.  You will need to have either the carrier record locator or ticket number to access the bookings.

Airline Cancellation Policies

Again given the magnitude of this storm I would advise that you rebook your air tickets and flight soon.  Here are a few of the carrier pages referencing the storm.  Each  airline has instructions that you need to follow.  The airline’s website will  display the most current information and important updates.

Best times to visit Branson Missouri and places to go

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Activities in Branson Missouri vary based on season!

Here’s an account of one person’s Recent Branson Visit:

We just returned from a four day visit to Branson.  This was my first trip.  We were very impressed with the picturesque scenery the closer and closer we got to the city.  The trees were just beginning to blossom in white, pink and purple flowers.  The weather was in the 70s and we did not ever need a sweater or jacket, even at night.

The atmosphere of Branson is very family friendly.  It was so much more laid back and refreshingly wholesome, compared to the cheap glamor and glitz of Las Vegas.   The regular/big named shows begin April/May, but we really enjoyed I the Pierce Arrow Show, Clay Cooper Show and the Dixie Stampede @ Dolly Parton’s theatre. We also visited the Butterfly Palace where we walked through a live butterfly habitat exhibit  … butterflys were all around us. The one hour video on the life and habits of the monarch butterfly greatly inhanced our appreciation for our tour. The Butterfly Palace includes interesting exhibits of rain forrest critters,  a mirror maze and great gift shop. We also road the Ducks (WWII terrain vehicles) that take visitors through a tour of the Branson and then it splashes into the lake for more siteseeing.

Branson offers a very relaxed destination and lots of family activities for all ages.  Branson’s attractions are nicely spread out throughout a wide area.  Many are within walking distance along the strip for easy access & convenience, while others are situated through out the rolling terrain.

Early Springtime was a perfect time to visit Branson.  The temperatures were modest and without humidity.

We very much enjoyed the staff and accommodations of the Savanna House.  It was located up on the hills overlooking the Ozarks. (ten minutes from the main strip) The Savanna’s scenic outdoor seating area overlooked  the mountains and offered great sunset viewing.   We loved the free breaksfast and evening desserts.   We would go back there anytime.

Branson is very very refreshing vacation desitination for many reasons.  We would go back anytime.  How beautiful those rolling hills must be when in Fall colors!!

Catch-Up Corner with Marilyn B Belleghem’s tips on visiting the Welk Resort in Branson, MO

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Travel to Branson and stay at the Welk Resort in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri.

CatchUp Corner with past guest Marilyn B Belleghem

Marilyn B Belleghem had some great tips that she gave on my Catch-Up Corner segment of my program about going to Branson Missouri with her husband recently. She Said:

“My husband and I went to Branson a year ago and we were there just before the major shows opened. We had a timeshare exchange and stayed at the Welk Resort. It has an amazing indoor pool and activity area. http://www.welkbranson.com/ I believe space can also be rented. It is new and nicely done but there isn’t much within walking distance.

Lots of restaurants, the Titanic exhibit was good and the outlet mall had some good stores but many were closed and empty.”

Thanks Marilyn

Branson Missouri has golf, shows, water parks, meals and ziplining

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Branson Missouri has golf, shows, water parks, meals and ziplining.

Janeen says we represent Branson’s Area Golf Council. And she says that there are a few things to consider when going to Branson:

* You must see Silver Dollar City: the amusement park celebrated 50 years and its combination of local craftsman, regional music and amusement parks is truly one of a kind.

* Branson Landing is a great, central location for those who enjoy hotel rooms. It’s within walking distance of a variety of restaurants for a lively nightscene (complete with the dancing water display) and within walking distance of the historic downtown. Definitely visit the Bass Pro Shop along the water.

* You must go to old Branson – especially the five and dime. Come with a list of things you couldn’t possibly find there, and then go on a scavenger hunt. Love that place, and the small hometown breakfast places that dot the streetscapes.

* See the Baldknobbers – they’re historic and give you a great feel of this community, and how it began. All the shows are excellent and entertaining.

* Do visit Big Cedar Resort, especially for dinner. It boasts one of the most beautiful views of Lake Taneycomo you’ll find anywhere in Branson.

* Ziplining is a lot of fun here, with a wealth of trees canopied over the runs. Many think of Branson for its shows, but you really should experience the great outdoors.

* Do go to Dogwood Canyon – rent a bike and bring a picnic. There’s a lovely tiny little wedding chapel that faces a waterfall, and is a place for special moments. You’ll understand why Johnny Morris loved this place after seeing it.

* Do play golf: because most of the celebrities play before they go onstage. What you’ll find is down-to-earth, salt-of-the-earth hard workers with good family values. Not one of them is protected by an agent. (Even Andy Williams lives right on a golf course and plays every morning he can).

* Do visit College of the Ozarks for dinner: the students run the restaurant at what’s known as “I work U” – free tuition in return for hard labor on campus. They’ve built sewer lines, furniture, take care of the hotel and even bake the bread. If you’re looking for hope from the next generation, you won’t find a better example anywhere else.

Thanks for the great tips Janeen, Branson seems to be a hidden gem found by a growing number of travelers in the United States.
