Many question arise when we talk about traveling and cruising around the world including:
How do I get a new U.S. Passport?
How do I renew my passport?
Any time you travel or fly outside of the United States or a U.S. Territory (e.g. Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, etc) then you need a passport book. If you drive to Canada or Mexico then you can get a Passport Card.
U.S. citizens traveling to The Bahamas by sea on private watercraft or most commercial vessels must have a valid passport. Those traveling by sea on an officially-designated “closed-loop cruise”, meaning that the port of entry is the same port as the port of re-entry upon return to the U.S., may enter using a passport, passport card, or other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document, however, it is prudent to obtain a passport before travel in case of an unforeseen emergency that requires a cruise passenger to disembark and return by air. (Please verify with your cruise line if your intended cruise is designated a closed-loop cruise.) Travelers arriving via private watercraft are charged docking fees.
We strongly encourage all U.S. citizens to apply for a passport book or passport card well in advance of anticipated travel. You can call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on how to apply for passports. If you are planning on an extended stay, be prepared to present evidence of financial solvency upon entry to The Bahamas. Visit the Embassy of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas for the most current visa information.
Going on a Closed Loop Cruise? Why should you still get a US Passport Book?
What if you do not get to the cruise ship and it leaves the U.S. Port? You will need a passport to fly to the first port that the ship will visit. NO PASSPORT, you miss the cruise.
What if you don’t get back to the ship before it leaves one of the ports on the itinerary? You will need a passport to fly to the next port to catch up with the ship … After you spend a day at the US Embassy to get clearance to fly.
What if there is a medical emergency and someone in your family has to leave a cruise early? You will need a passport to fly internationally.
What if there is a problem with a ship and you need to get a flight back to the United States (Carnival Dream Cruise Ship Reports Problems In St. Maarten – Passengers headed to the airport Thursday instead of sailing home after an on-board generator problem halted their trip.) – You have to go to the US Embassy to get clearance and foot the bill yourself.
Are you willing to take the risk?
The last question shouldn’t only be:
How do I renew my passportbut when? The US Government requires passports to be valid at least six months after you arrive home from foreign travel or cruises. If the expiration date is June 30, 2015 then your vacation should arrive home prior to December 30, 2014. So I guess this means that a 10 year passport is only valid for nine and one half years and a five year passport is only valid for four and one half years.
Have passport FEES gone up?
Current U.S. Passport fees are:
A) $100 to $135 for a new adult US Passport.
B) $75 to $110 for a renewal adult Passport for the United States.
C) $0 to $82 to add passport book pages. It is currently FREE!
Passport cards are cheaper, but have conditions:
A) Cards can only be used to travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda ONLY by land or sea.
B) To fly to these destinations you would need a regular passport book.
If you need to do anything with your passport, plan on at least applying for it in person or dropping it in the mail to beat any fee increases. Government Regulation
National Passport Information Center toll-free at:
1-877-487-2778.
Do I need a passport to cruise?
YES, I would highly suggest that any time you visit any foreign country including Canada, Bermuda, and Mexico that you get a passport book just in case you miss your ship departure and need to fly out or back to meet it.

Activities in Branson Missouri vary based on season!
Here’s an account of one person’s Recent Branson Visit:
We just returned from a four day visit to Branson. This was my first trip. We were very impressed with the picturesque scenery the closer and closer we got to the city. The trees were just beginning to blossom in white, pink and purple flowers. The weather was in the 70s and we did not ever need a sweater or jacket, even at night.
The atmosphere of Branson is very family friendly. It was so much more laid back and refreshingly wholesome, compared to the cheap glamor and glitz of Las Vegas. The regular/big named shows begin April/May, but we really enjoyed I the Pierce Arrow Show, Clay Cooper Show and the Dixie Stampede @ Dolly Parton’s theatre. We also visited the Butterfly Palace where we walked through a live butterfly habitat exhibit … butterflys were all around us. The one hour video on the life and habits of the monarch butterfly greatly inhanced our appreciation for our tour. The Butterfly Palace includes interesting exhibits of rain forrest critters, a mirror maze and great gift shop. We also road the Ducks (WWII terrain vehicles) that take visitors through a tour of the Branson and then it splashes into the lake for more siteseeing.
Branson offers a very relaxed destination and lots of family activities for all ages. Branson’s attractions are nicely spread out throughout a wide area. Many are within walking distance along the strip for easy access & convenience, while others are situated through out the rolling terrain.
Early Springtime was a perfect time to visit Branson. The temperatures were modest and without humidity.
We very much enjoyed the staff and accommodations of the Savanna House. It was located up on the hills overlooking the Ozarks. (ten minutes from the main strip) The Savanna’s scenic outdoor seating area overlooked the mountains and offered great sunset viewing. We loved the free breaksfast and evening desserts. We would go back there anytime.
Branson is very very refreshing vacation desitination for many reasons. We would go back anytime. How beautiful those rolling hills must be when in Fall colors!!
Marilyn B Belleghem had some great tips that she gave on my Catch-Up Corner segment of my program about going to Branson Missouri with her husband recently. She Said:
“My husband and I went to Branson a year ago and we were there just before the major shows opened. We had a timeshare exchange and stayed at the Welk Resort. It has an amazing indoor pool and activity area. http://www.welkbranson.com/ I believe space can also be rented. It is new and nicely done but there isn’t much within walking distance.
Lots of restaurants, the Titanic exhibit was good and the outlet mall had some good stores but many were closed and empty.”
Thanks Marilyn

Branson Missouri has golf, shows, water parks, meals and ziplining.
Janeen says we represent Branson’s Area Golf Council. And she says that there are a few things to consider when going to Branson:
* You must see Silver Dollar City: the amusement park celebrated 50 years and its combination of local craftsman, regional music and amusement parks is truly one of a kind.
* Branson Landing is a great, central location for those who enjoy hotel rooms. It’s within walking distance of a variety of restaurants for a lively nightscene (complete with the dancing water display) and within walking distance of the historic downtown. Definitely visit the Bass Pro Shop along the water.
* You must go to old Branson – especially the five and dime. Come with a list of things you couldn’t possibly find there, and then go on a scavenger hunt. Love that place, and the small hometown breakfast places that dot the streetscapes.
* See the Baldknobbers – they’re historic and give you a great feel of this community, and how it began. All the shows are excellent and entertaining.
* Do visit Big Cedar Resort, especially for dinner. It boasts one of the most beautiful views of Lake Taneycomo you’ll find anywhere in Branson.
* Ziplining is a lot of fun here, with a wealth of trees canopied over the runs. Many think of Branson for its shows, but you really should experience the great outdoors.
* Do go to Dogwood Canyon – rent a bike and bring a picnic. There’s a lovely tiny little wedding chapel that faces a waterfall, and is a place for special moments. You’ll understand why Johnny Morris loved this place after seeing it.
* Do play golf: because most of the celebrities play before they go onstage. What you’ll find is down-to-earth, salt-of-the-earth hard workers with good family values. Not one of them is protected by an agent. (Even Andy Williams lives right on a golf course and plays every morning he can).
* Do visit College of the Ozarks for dinner: the students run the restaurant at what’s known as “I work U” – free tuition in return for hard labor on campus. They’ve built sewer lines, furniture, take care of the hotel and even bake the bread. If you’re looking for hope from the next generation, you won’t find a better example anywhere else.
Thanks for the great tips Janeen, Branson seems to be a hidden gem found by a growing number of travelers in the United States.

Nicki says: “My parents have a lake house in Branson. I am always surprised people go there and don’t do things on the AWESOME table rock lake.” She has the following tips for visiting Branson:
Catlin has one great tip for visiting Branson, Missouri. She says, “I’ve traveled to Branson several times. I would highly recommend staying at Big Cedar Lodge, which is about 15 minutes outside of Branson.”
Thanks for the tip Catlin. Sometimes its nice to get off the beatened path.
Branson Missouri is a GREAT place for families with kids to vacation!
Interested in going on a vacation to Branson Missouri? Well Marty says: “My family travels to Branson a couple of times per year. Here are my thoughts and tips:
Tip #1 Branson is a GREAT place for families with kids to vacation. It’s clean, friendly, fun and family-oriented.
Tip #2 We’ve yet to see a show there we haven’t enjoyed. However, some of our most favorite venues are Titanic Museum,
Dixie Stampede, New Shanghai Circus, Legend of Kung Fu and any of the MANY go-kart tracks.
Tip #3 The venues in Branson are very accommodating to those who are differently-abled. As the parent of a Deaf child, I
am been blown away at the accommodations the attractions have made to ensure my child has the best experience. This
was especially true of Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede.
Tip #4 Branson is great for families on a budget. There are enough activities that are free or nearly free to keep a family
busy for days. Recommendations include the fish hatchery, watching the “Water Fountain Spectacular’ on Branson Landing,
and of course fishing and hanging out on the lake.

Links to St Patrick’s Day Parades in the United States and Ireland
You can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the entire month of March if you go to the Ozark, IL Irish Inn owned and operated by Lynn and Brian McCreery. There guests are entertained with Irish music, storytelling around warm fires, and of course special catered dinner feasts of Irish stew, corned beef and cabbage and a full Irish breakfast in the morning, but guest can celebrate and enjoy Irish traditions whenever they visit the Irish Inn.
The McCreerys are more than happy to share their love of this famed holiday with their guests. This off-the-beaten-path bed and breakfast, nestled in the Shawnee National Forest, has charmed a multitude of guests and always keep travelers coming back from more!
I’ve included some of their famed recipes and even including their Full Irish Breakfast, Scots Irish Stew and their Downpatrick Corned Beef. Since St. Patrick is buried in Downpatrick, a town not far from where Brian was born, they call their first secret family recipe for corned beef and cabbage the “Downpatrick Corned Beef.”
Downpatrick Corned Beef
Ingredients:
*
5 pounds brisket
¼ cup mustard
1 tablespoon mustard seed
1 tablespoon of pickling spices
¼ cup maple syrup
1 head of cabbage
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon of chopped garlic
*
Directions:*
1. Preheat oven to 325. Wash the brisket and then pat dry. Put on a paste of the mustard, mustard seed and pickling spices and maple syrup.
2. Place roast in a roasting pan with about 2 cups of water at 325 for 2 hours, basting ever so often with the maple syrup. When 2 hours is up make sure brisket can be pierced with fork.
3. When there is an hour left on the brisket begin to chop up the head of cabbage. Cut the head into two and then chop into bite sized pieces. In a skillet add a tablespoon of olive oil and teaspoon of garlic, the chopped up cabbage and salt and pepper to taste.
Meal can be served with either mashed or roasted potatoes.
Here are some additional Irish recipes:
* Scots Irish Stew
Ingredients:*
3 pounds stew beef or lamb cut into one inch cubes
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 head garlic – mince all the cloves in the head
2-3 large onions chopped
6 cups beef stock (you can prepare from beef cubes with water)
1 cup dark ale
1 can tomato paste (cup of tomato catsup can substitute)
4 large tomatoes chopped
1 tablespoon sugar
2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon basil
1 tablespoon thyme
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (soy sauce can substitute)
3-1/2 pounds red potatoes
1/2 stick butter
3 cups peeled carrots cut in medallions
Salt and pepper to taste
One piece cinnamon bark
Parsley and coriander leaves for garnish
*Directions:
*
1. Heat olive oil in very large pot over medium heat. Sauté meat until brown, then add garlic and onion. Continue to move the meat in the pot with new ingredients over heat for another seven minutes, then sprinkle with sugar.
2. Add beef stock, ale, tomato ingredients, spices, and Worcestershire or soy sauce, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer for another two hours, stirring every 15-20 minutes.
3. In a deep skillet sauté the potatoes and carrots in butter or olive oil, whichever you prefer. Add to the stew pot after it has simmered for two hours. Add the cinnamon bark or stick and simmer on lowest heat for another 40 minutes.
4. Remove the bark and bay leaves. Garnish with parsley, coriander, or a combination of both.
Serve this Scots Irish stew with garlic bread, crusty Italian bread with creamery butter, or traditional Irish soda bread. A glass of red wine or mug of Guinness goes very well with this easy to prepare Irish dinner.
*
**Yields:* 8 servings
*
Full Irish Breakfast *
(Also know as Ulster Fry, a combination of traditional Irish ingredients
and American alternatives)
*Ingredients:*
2 traditional Irish bangers
2 slices Irish bacon (country ham portion will substitute)
1 medium pork chop
3 pieces American bacon
2 pieces each black and white pudding (if you can find an Irish butcher) – the black pudding is something like a flavorful blutwurst and the white is something like a mild liverwurst (to compare the tastes to meats readers may find more familiar)
2 slices tomato
¼ cup mushrooms
¼ cup white wine
2 eggs
2 slices potato bread (rye of whole wheat toast will substitute)
Butter
Orange marmalade
*
Directions:*
Everyone knows how to prepare these ingredients. The secret is to serve them all hot to the table simultaneously, which is where a second pair of hands comes in nicely!
1. Fry the potato bread n eggs in a little of the meat fat, with eggs made sunny-side up. Spoon some of the meat fat over the cooking egg for extra flavor and to ensure even cooking.
2. Lightly sauté the tomatoes and grill the pork chops, while cooking the mushrooms in white wine.

Mary Jane has some Orlando Dining Tips. She says if you’re traveling to Orlando with young children it’s important to locate restaurants that offer an environment and menus that are kid-friendly.
Travelers put in so much effort to plan the perfect getaway with selecting hotels, attractions and activities for their families, but the one thing that sometimes falls by the wayside when setting up the itinerary is a magical dining experience!
At Fulton’s Crab House, Portobello and Wolfgang Puck Café, all conveniently and scenically located in Downtown Disney® at Walt Disney World Resort, a lackluster dinner is never a concern! Each restaurant offers a unique and exciting dining atmosphere with fresh and inspired menu selections, and creative kids menus too. And being so close to the popular theme parks and hotels, it has never been more convenient to enjoy a fun and memorable dining event.
With all three location nestled on the Downtown Disney® property, there are plenty of activities to do after dinner as well. Perhaps take a ride on the Characters in Flight tethered balloon and soar 400 feet above the ground! For the movie lovers in the family visit the AMC® Downtown Disney 24 Theatre to see this season’s blockbuster. There is also La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil®, an amazing acrobatic spectacle and DisneyQuest® Indoor Interactive Theme Park, for exciting arcade fun.
Walk the plank up to Fulton’s Crab House grand riverboat restaurant for a dining experience unlike any other. A treat for the taste buds and Disney history buffs, Fulton’s is actually the originally named Empress Lilly riverboat, a gift from Walt Disney to his wife Lillian (Lilly). From Alaskan-king crab claws to stone and blue crab, Fulton’s menu always features fresh, newly inspired and traditional seafood dishes. Tuna, salmon, mahi-mahi, lobster, juicy steaks and chops, creamy bisques and chowders, salads, appetizers, desserts and an award-winning wine list round out the offerings. Plus the ever-pleasing kids menu and seasonal specialties. Let Fulton’s delectable menu items and oceanic themed dining rooms thrill you for an experience that far surpasses any typical dining location. Fulton’s also features private decks for special functions and parties.
Portobello restaurant is a relaxing trattoria that immediately transports guests to the Tuscan countryside with its warmly rustic interior décor, outdoor alfresco patio, wood-burning oven, expansive wine list, and at its heart, mouth-watering Italian fare. Begin with a choice of antipasti platters or appetizers such as the Sambuca Shrimp, or one of four wood-burning oven pizza choices. Entrée selections of pasta dishes, steak, chicken and seafood range from Black Linguine with Florida Rock Shrimp, Rigatoni Calabrese, and the signature Bucatini, to Chicken Pizzaiola, Mahi Mahi with Polenta, and Beer Braised Pork Belly to name a few. Save room for desserts such as their specialty Biramisu: Tiramisu with beer! A kids’ favorites menu offers pizza, spaghetti, chicken, steak, burgers and more. And for larger groups you can even enjoy family-style dining featuring heaping platters of pasta and more.
Asian and California-fusion cuisine serves as art for the eye and the palate in the vibrant setting of the Wolfgang Puck Grand Café. The multi-concept restaurant known for its fresh ingredients and innovative dishes offers guests four separate dining options in the casual-chic Café, the upscale Dining Room, the high-energy Sushi Bar and the quick-service Express. Dine on a bevy of delicious starters, soups, sides and main dishes from melt in your mouth sushi to the Dining Room’s signature menu items such as Duck Napoleon, Kurobuta Pork Wienerschnitzel and Seared Salmon with Turnip Puree. Savor delicious wine from the Wine Spectator award-winning wine selection, but remember to save room for their signature Carrot Cake and Key Lime Pie. An innovative kids menu ensures everyone is satisfied, whether dining with family or friends for lunch or dinner or with a large group for a special occasion.

Thanks for the tips Mary Jane.
MARY JANE K. works for a PR firm representing the restaurants listed above.
Meghan was born and raised in Orlando, Fla. and now lives in Atlanta. She wanted to send some ideas your way regarding tips for traveling the area. She says:
Although Orlando is most famous for it’s theme parks, most locals tend to stay as far away from them as possible.
One of the best areas of Central Florida is Winter Park a small suburb on the outskirts of downtown Orlando. Winter Park (http://www.cityofwinterpark.org/ ) is home to Rollins College, Park Avenue and the beautiful chain of lakes.
I would recommend the Winter Park scenic boat tour (http://scenicboattours.com/home.htm), a stroll down Park Avenue to visit the unique shops and restaurants, and a visit to the Morse Museum (home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany).
The best time to visit Winter Park is during the annual Winter Park Art Festival (http://www.wpsaf.org/CMS/), which will take place on March 16, 17 and 18 of this year. Artists from all over the country come to showcase their work while residents throughout Florida come to stroll in the sunshine. Food trucks and restaurants offer unique bites and cocktails, while retailers provide sales to attract new customers. Because Winter Park is such a low-key city, celebrities such as Hugh Jackman and Carrot Top along with NBA stars, Dwight Howard and Michael Jordan have been spotted spending time at this event.
