Catch-Up Corner with Marilyn B Belleghem’s tips on visiting the Welk Resort in Branson, MO

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Travel to Branson and stay at the Welk Resort in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri.

CatchUp Corner with past guest Marilyn B Belleghem

http://www.CruiseWithBruce.com/cruise_radio/Marilyn_Belleghem_Trans-Atlantic_Cruise

Marilyn B Belleghem had some great tips that she gave on my Catch-Up Corner segment of my program about going to Branson Missouri with her husband recently. She Said:

“My husband and I went to Branson a year ago and we were there just before the major shows opened. We had a timeshare exchange and stayed at the Welk Resort. It has an amazing indoor pool and activity area. http://www.welkbranson.com/ I believe space can also be rented. It is new and nicely done but there isn’t much within walking distance.

Lots of restaurants, the Titanic exhibit was good and the outlet mall had some good stores but many were closed and empty.”

Thanks Marilyn

Rome Italy Ex-patriot and Author Judith Works Coins in a Fountain

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Listen to Author Judith Works talk about life in Rome and about her book “Coins in a Fountain”

Play

Judith Works took a chance on a mid-life correction by moving from Portland, Oregon to Rome to work for the United Nations, first for the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and then after a three-year gap (which she minded) she returned to Rome to work for the UN World Food Programme. She received her law degree from Lewis & Clark Law School. She has traveled to over 100 countries for work and pleasure.

Pasta! Vino! Hill Towns! Coins in the Fountain will transport you to Italy where you can find out what its really like to live the expatriate life. It’s all here in the story of a couple who said “NO!” to middle age boredom and made a dash from a small-town in Oregon to cosmopolitan Rome when the author went to work for the United Nations.  A brush with the Italian medical system, an auto accident with the military police, dealing with an excitable landlord and helping pick grapes all became part of their daily adventures. And of course there were many new friends like the countess with her butt-reducing machine and the count who served as a model for statues of naked horsemen.

In between actually working there were Italian weddings to attend, music to be heard, travel with the wine club and country weekends in Umbria where the Etruscans still seem to be lurking about. Taking up retirement unexpectedly the husband met strange vegetables in his valiant efforts to learn to cook Italian-style. In between he played golf on a course where the rough had unexploded bombs and crewed on a sailboat that came close to disaster on the way to Greece.

Part memoir, part travelogue to off-beat sites in Rome and elsewhere, you will be amused and intrigued with the stories of food, friends and adventures. You, too, will want to run away to join the Circus (the Circus Maximus, that is). And before you depart Rome, you will never forget to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return to beautiful Rome and enchanting Italy.

Now retired near Seattle, she continues to travel in between writing and volunteering for arts, literary and scientific organizations.

During this travel internet radio show, Bruce Oliver, host of the “Cruise Radio Network’s: Cruise with Bruce™” show will talk with Pamela Bitterman and find out more about her experience traveling to Costa Rica. Listen to Pam talk about her book and adventures on a tall ship during the 1970′s when she met her husband in Costa Rica. Also learn about their last visit to Costa Rica a couple of years ago.

Pamela Bitterman’s first book, Sailing To the Far Horizon, her own story of life, loss, and survival at sea is graphically biographical. It encapsulates the author as product of the first thirty years of her life. Muzungu, the story of the author’s unlikely escapades throughout Kenya, picks up on that journey a couple decades later.

She has also written a children’s book titled When This Is Over, I Will Go To School, And I Will Learn To Read; A Story of Hope and Friendship for One Young Kenyan Orphan. Finally, the author has penned a homily entitled, Child, You Are Miracle. Links to these, plus trailers to her three published books  found on her website: www.pamelasismanbitterman.com

Bitterman’s writing has emerged amidst her travels, adventures, and finally her marriage and children, her persona as wife and mother – the heart of her; the author as her best self.  Her future remains to be seen, and to be told.

Pam teaches maritime history and seamanship at the San Diego Maritime Museum. She is currently living in the Greater San Diego Area and has traveled all over the world.

Music on the Album: Jealous of the Angels

Quotes about Jenn Bostic

“Jenn delivers on both performance and songwriting. Well mixed  songs with enough of her own individual style to carry things off in a crowded  musical market place.”
BeeHive Candy 2011

About Jenn Bostic

“Love me,  hate me/Leave or take me/Just don’t make me change” “Change”

Jenn Bostic’s career as a singer and songwriter began when she  was 10 years old, in the back seat of her father’s car with her older brother on  the way to school. A horrific crash that killed her dad, a hobby musician who taught her folk songs like “Sunny Side of the Street,” and turned her on to Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, changed the 25-year-old’s life forever.

“God must need another angel/Around the throne tonight,” she sings on “Jealous of the Angels,” a song on her second album, the follow-up to her promising debut, Keep Lookin for Love. “Your love lives on inside of me/And I will hold on tight.”

Born in Philadelphia, but raised in Waconia, Minnesota, a small town 30 miles west of
Minneapolis, Jenn grew up singing with her family around the piano. Her father,  a CEO of NordicTrack, played a variety of instruments, including accordion, while his daughter picked up a love of folk, blues, R&B, soul, show tunes and, eventually, country. Seeing her father die in front of her made her angry with God at first, but she later found an outlet for her sorrow in music and writing songs.

“The first time I was able to sit down at the piano and play, I shut my eyes and honestly felt a presence next to me,” she explains. “I poured my heart into those first few songs. The only way I could connect and be with my dad was when I played music. And I still feel that way.”

Jenn went on to perform wherever she could, taking voice, piano and acting lessons, singing in choirs and school musicals. She would sit in with a local roots band, Traveled Ground, that consisted of teachers from her middle and high school, and once included her father on accordion.

She went east to attend the famed Berklee School of Music, where she honed her performance skills while studying music education, a field still vitally important to her.

“One day, I’d love to open up a ‘School of Rock’ type institution,” she says. “Just really give back by working with people who are as passionate as I am about music.” She also discovered country music, singing for a cover band called DiggerDawg, which opened for a variety of performers, including Alan Jackson, Josh Turner, Brad Paisley, Reba McEntire and Gretchen Wilson, as well as traveling to Iraq and Kuwait on an Armed Forces Jet.

Listen as Jane Congdon talks about IT STARTED WITH DRACULA: The Count, My Mother and Me and gives tips on taking a vacation or holiday to Dracula’s stomping grounds in Transylvania.

ABOUT Jane Congdon

Jane Congdon has been an English teacher, a journalist, and a book editor. In her publishing career, she worked with textbook authors and traveled around the United States speaking to groups of business educators.

Jane grew up in Glen Ferris, a small town in the mountains of West Virginia. As a young girl, she loved movies about Dracula. They ignited a dream in her to see the castles and forests of Transylvania, but first she had to face the monster that lurked in her very own house—a mother whose thirst was more frightening than a vampire’s.

Transylvania's "Vlad the Impaler" - Dracula houseWhen Jane retired she set out alone for an 18 day trip to Bucharest, Romania. Myth met reality as she toured the villages and castles of Dracula’s homeland with a guide. What she didn’t expect was an inner journey through her own past.

Through the prism of Dracula’s legend and the Transylvanian countryside, Jane connects with the girl she had been and puts her childhood into perspective. Along the way, she sees her mother in a new light and learns to heal the wounds of her past. Her book: “It Started with Dracula” is a story of expectations and surprises; survival, forgiveness, and hope.

Today, Jane is a member of the Transylvanian Society of Dracula, she likes vampires and bats—the artificial kind. She’s started her new career as a travel writer and author starting with the book that she penned on her Romanian Adventure through Vlad the Impaler’s homeland.

Travel Internet Radio Show guest Fred Krakowiak talks about Victoria Falls & Zimbabwe Africa

For more information about traveling with Fred Krakowiak to Victoria Falls & Zimbabwe Africa visit: http://InternetRadio.CruiseWithBruce.com and click on the link for Fred Krakowiak.

During this travel internet radio show, Bruce Oliver, host of the “Cruise Radio Network’s: Cruise with Bruce talks with his guest, Fred Krakowiak and find out more about traveling to Victoria Falls & Zimbabwe Africa. Listen as Fred Krakowiak talks about work as a safari artist & expert and gives tips on taking a vacation or holiday to Victoria Falls & Zimbabwe Africa.

ABOUT FRED KRAKWIAK (SAFARI EXPERT & SAFARI ARTIST)

Fred Krakowiak, author of Africa: An Artist’s Safari, is recognized as a leading wildlife artist as well as a safari expert. His artwork is commissioned internationally by both private and corporate collectors. He creates vibrant paintings of wildlife from Africa and across the world by capturing them in motion with unique techniques using mediums such as oil on copper and dye on silk.

Early on, Krakowiak realized his passion for painting as well as his genuine love for African wildlife. Blessed with the gift of an artist’s eye, he is able to detail every nuance of the animal’s very existence. With over twenty-five years of conventional study in various mediums including watercolor, oil, pen & ink and dye on silk, Krakowiak’s foundation has been his formal training in the ancient art of Sumi (pictures in ink). The fundamentals of Sumi require the artist to learn from their mistakes and often omit details. Krakowiak’s paintings illustrate that what is missing is as important as what remains. This skill allows viewers to become involved in the painting by filling in the missing details with their imagination and experience the power of action at that exact moment of passion.

Krakowiak’s book Africa: An Artist’s Safari is a narrative that chronicles his travels in Africa. He was inspired to capture African animals by his awareness that one day his artwork and stories may be all that remains of these majestic creatures. His appreciation and respect for the mysterious beauty of these animals and the land was the motivation for creating his beautiful book. Described as a “feast for the eyes” by the Virginia Quarterly Review, Africa: An Artist’s Safari was the recipient of the prestigious 2008 Ben Franklin Award for large format cover design.

Guest singer-songwriter Jeff Johnson talks music | SHINE & Chicago

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

To hear my interview with my guest Greater Chicago native and singer/songwriter Jeff Johnson please go to http://InternetRadio.CruiseWithBruce.com/music/

Thanks for watching, I’m Bruce Oliver with the Cruise Radio Network and host of the Cruise with Bruce Internet Radio show.

Singer/songwriter Jeff Johnson was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago in the 70′s and first started playing the piano with his brother when he was 9 years old. Bacharach and David, the Beatles, The Beach Boys, Bee Gees, Elton John and others influenced their song writing and playing since then. In the late 80′s they formed the Chalk Farm band which enjoyed much success in the Chicago club scene, headlining at the legendary Cabaret Metro and Park West among other venues.

After Chalk Farm broke up, Jeff moved to Los Angeles and found success as a dance music artist in the mid 90′s with two club hits – his own song “Whenever You’re Lonely” and a dance cover of the Bee Gee’s “How Deep is Your Love” which appeared on over 30 compilation albums in Asia. Both singles were released on his own Interhit Records label founded along with his partner remixer/producer Chris Cox. While running Interhit he also wrote songs for Englebert Humperdink’s Dance album in 1998 and co-wrote the album cover hit “Try Me” for Japanese artist Mylin’s Beautiful album in 1999.

Between 1999 and 2008 Jeff ran label/distributor Megahit Records when he found the long lost songs that he and his brother wrote when they were younger. Over the next couple of years Jeff worked to remix the material for release and wrote 20 new songs. With the help of several musicians from R&B legend Bobby Caldwell’s touring band including Jean McClain (aka Pepper Mashay the lead singer, drummer Johnny Friday and guitarist Carlyle Barriteau, bassist Reggie McBride and recording studio owner Carmen Grillo they worked on his new album “Shine”. Jean McClain brought in Marcellina Hawthorne and both handled background vocals while Carmen brought in Alex Wurmbrand, Paul Henning, Alwyn Wright and Maxim Velichkin to lend their talents on strings. Renown horn players Greg Adams, Michael Paulo and Lee Thornburg as well as organist Joey Navarro added to the collaborative efforts.

Thanks for watching, I’m Bruce Oliver with the Cruise Radio Network and host of the Cruise with Bruce Internet Radio show.

Andrew Cole is a Toronto born singer/songwriter that moved with his parents to Liverpool, Wales, Las Vegas, Toronto and Florida as a youth. A natural born singer, Cole grew up constantly singing other people’s songs, developing a vocal style characterized by a remarkable range of expression. Still, Andrew couldn’t see himself as a performer on stage. When he finally took to the stage and began the process of finding his voice in 2002 he entered and won Stars In Your Eyes, a nationwide UK musical competition; the next year was named the UK’s North West Artist of the Year; over three years of university at Salford in Manchester – the longest uninterrupted time he’d spent in one place – he played the pubs four nights a week, further developing his already substantial vocal chops.
Still his voice as a songwriter remained in lock up, expressed only through his reinterpretations of the songs he chose to cover. It wasn’t until he returned to Canada after his father’s death in late 2004 that he began working on his own material; writing his first song – Why We Wonder’s closing track, We Must Win – in the backyard of his new home in Oakville, Ontario.
When Canadian rock icon Tom Cochrane and his wife Kathleene Cochran, now Cole’s manager, heard rough demos of those first efforts they were convinced by what Cochrane describes as “a voice other singers would die for”, and set out to help the fledgling songwriter realize his potential.

WHY WE WONDER – Although there are shades of David Gray and The Beatles haunting the edges of his voice and arrangements, Cole’s songs and sound are entirely unique: From ‘My Lovely’, which begins as a campfire love song and mutates into a torrent of raging guitars that come on like a swift summer storm and pass just as quickly; to his brutally frank expressions of the dangers of time running out before love on lead single, ‘Out Of Time’; through to ‘Dead Roses’, a country tinged ballad inspired by a simple emotional reaction to a women’s perfume and featuring backing vocals by Kathleen Edwards.

Why We Wonder was released June 8, 2010 (Crier Records / Fontana North / Universal Music Canada). The video for lead single, Out Of Time, directed by Andrew MacNaughtan, is currently in heavy rotation on MuchMoreMusic.

It’s been 150 years since the dreary days when several slave-holding Southern States declared their intentions to secede from the Union of the the United States of America. It was just a short time after the election of President Abraham Lincoln. It all started when the legislature of South Carolina passed an ordinance stating that the “Union is Dissolved” on December 20, 1860 and published it in the Charleston Mercury Newspaper. The struggle between ideologies of states rights vs. a strong Federal Government was as controversial then as it is today. And the Southern agrarian, slave-holding states believed that their rights were being trampled on by the Industrial Northern Yankees. It was inevitable that there would be a Civil War between the North and South.

On April 12, 1861 the first canon blasts were hurled at Ft Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. President Abraham Lincoln called on the states that had not joined the Confederate States to supply 75,000 volunteers to suppress the insurrec
