Last Hurrah of Summer
By: Maria King
Date: August 19, 2012
This is the last weekend before the unofficial end of summer on Labor Day weekend. Even though there is still 3+ weeks left of summer according to the calendar, we think of the end when the kids go back to school and vacations at the beach and summer camps are finally over. Most college students are back on campus by now. It’s a sad time for the kids, great time for the parents (sorry kids). As always, we Americans are never ones to let an occasion go without a party or some sort of recognition. This week, we have some very large, very established events that are kind of like the recent Olympic Closing ceremonies. We send off the summer season in style.
I wanted to shy away from Fairs as a category included here, even though some of the largest fairs all year take place the last few weeks of August. I tried to find events that fit into a few other categories this week. Again this week, just like last, there are a few ethnic festivals that make the list; The Oakland Chinatown Streetfest in Oakland CA, the Peachtree Latino Festival in Atlanta, GA, Festa Italiana in Portland OR and one event that blends a bunch, Festival of Nations in Saint Louis, MO.
In addition there is an air show, Great State of Maine, in Brunswick (I will let you guess what state, lol), there is a corn festival, DeKalb Corn Festival in DeKalb, IL and two car themed events, Corvettes at Carlisle and the 28th Street Metro Cruise Car Show.
The big winner this week of over riding theme is art shows. I have been trying to figure out what about the end of summer signals art festival, but I am stumped. Could be that summer is the time when great art is created and the end of the season is when it is sold? That sounds ridiculous even for me. Nonetheless, this week there are quite a few huge art themed events. Anyone of which not only features artists with terrific talent but, also have lots of great other things to offer as well.
I am sure that there is a great selection of events taking place in your area this week to send “summer’ off in style. If none of these on this list are near you, take a moment to use the search box above to find events taking place in your own backyard. Most of all, grab someone you love spending time with and do just that at a wonderful event this week.

Since 1981. The backbone of the festival and the key to its success are the three hundred fine artists and crafters whose display booths are placed back-to-back along University Avenue. These exhibitors are the reason why this festival attracts such a high percentage of fine artists and crafters whose work you’ll see only at a few select shows on the West Coast. Always a crowd- pleaser, the Italian Street Painting Expo will again offer fifty chalk artists creating larger-than-life works of art all weekend long on Tasso Street. Children will enjoy the ever-popular Kids’ Art Studio too. Then sample some of the great gourmet food, fine wines or micro-brews and enjoy the street and stage entertainment throughout.
