Fun, Funny and Just Plain Silly this Week

This week I am highlighting events near and dear to my heart, silly. Personally, I wanted to share some of my favorite silly events and event themes with you. Many will describe me as silly so maybe that is why I like them or maybe it’s just that I like to have fun. Some of these events took a slice of their hometown and made it golden. I love when people can take a negative and make it a positive. You know lemons into lemonade kind of thing. How about mosquitoes into a positive? I bet that is a new one for you. That is exactly what they do in Clute Texas. Every July they host the Mosquito Festival. Rumor has it that the original “mosquito” Willie-Man-Chew ( I love that name) decided it was a great place to settle. But celebrating mosquitoes is a stroke of genius for this town as this festival is consistently named a top event in almost every survey. The rest as they say is history and it looks like Clute is getting the last laugh.

Along with the Mosquito Festival another top rated festival this week is The Gilroy Garlic Festival. Ever eat Garlic Gator? I know where you can get some. How about Garlic Chocolate, Garlic Ice Cream or Garlic Jelly? If you would like to try it, grab your fork and head on over. It is a culinary overload of everything garlic and truly unique in the appreciation of this aromatic herb. Even if you do not care for garlic I assure you that you will enjoy this event.

This week we find lots of options. There is the Bologna Festival in Yale Michigan and the Hot Dog Festival in, are you ready, Frankfurt Indiana. Both of these events are super fun and make something special out of something with a real local connection. But not to be outdone, there is also a Hot Dog Festival in Huntington, WV. Also up on the schedule this week is the World Championship Cardboard Boat Races in Arkansas, and yes, most of them actually do float! The Nissawa Turtle Races in MN, a Pierogi Festival in IN, a Potato Festival in MI, Ding Dong Days in AR and National Day of the Cowboy in Sedona, AZ. When are they going to have the National Day for Harried Women Who Work Too Many Hours? I could be Grand Marshall of that Parade(if I could get the day off)!!!!

I have a few honorable mentions this week that aren’t silly themed but they sure are fantastic, do-not-miss, events. If you happen to be in the area where any of these will be taking place, be sure to attend. They are worth the trip on so many levels. The Pony Swim on Chincoteague Island in Virginia is an amazing event featuring beautiful horses and ponies in a strikingly beautiful journey. The Oswego Harborfest in Oswego, NY , the Bele Chere Festival in Asheville, NC, the Saint Ann’s Italian Street Festival in Hoboken, NJ and the Bellevue Art events in Bellevue, WA are all huge events that have been entertaining and supporting their communities for many years. I invite you, if you can get to any of these, to do it. You can thank me later!

As always, if none of the events that I recommend this week is geographically possible for you to attend, please be sure to use the search box above to find great events in your own backyard! Don’t worry about finding silly events a great time either. I have been doing it for years and never regretted my choices once!
