Chongqing, CHINA
(previously called Chungking)
In April of 1977, Chongqing was separated from Sichuan Province,
and became an independent municipality, encompassing the entire Yangtze Valley
between Wushan (Lesser Three Gorges) and Chongqing proper. We toured this proud
mountain city, which was the capital of China during World War II, and which
today is the most important inland industrial city in China.

XIAN, CHINA
When ancient Peking was just a remote trading post, Xian was the
capital of the Middle Kingdom and one of the world's biggest and richest cities.
It's a dry northwestern plateau in China. Here palaces, pavilions and pagodas
crowned the skyline - and artists, poets and cooks catered to the most demanding
imperial tastes.
XIAN / TERRA COTTA ARMY
The Terra Cotta Warrior Army is China's greatest archaeological
attraction, the terra cotta warriors of the Qin Army. The life-sized infantrymen
and archers, officers and their horses guard the tomb of the first Qin emperor.
Walkways permit tourists a bird's-eye view of the site, revealing the deployment
of the troops and the crumbled state in which many of the figures were found.
Appreciate the touches that made each of the warriors an individual - a varying
headdress, a moustache or beard, or a different look about the eyes. The eager,
graceful horses also have distinctive traits.
Also in Xian, China are the Banpo Museum, archaeological site of
a 6,000-year-old Neolithic village and the Big 'Wild Goose and Little Wild Goose
Pagodas - the two most famous pagodas in China due to their age and historical
significance.

The Reed Flute Cave. The cave burrows deep into a hill, and on
the surface grow reeds suitable for making flutes. Inside the cave are bizarre
formations with poetic names.
