The People's Republic of China Travel & Cruise with Bruce Oliver Go to:    Home    2    3    4    5    6    7    8   MAIN SITE   BLOG PAGE 4 WATER IN THE YANGTZE ALREADY 70 METRES ABOVE NORMAL WILL RISE TO ~ 300 METRES WHEN THE DAM IS FINISHED IN 2009 Until only 50 years ago the Yangtze cruise was a very risky enterprise; thousands of coolies towed vessels upstream by means of ropes and pulleys. Then, for the next 118 miles, the Yangtze forces its way through a spectacular barrier of solid limestone ridges known as the Three Gorges - Xiling, Wu and Qutang. You'll sail through narrow cliff-bound passages - past tombs, shrines and caves - through stretches of tranquil shoals and foaming rapids. Look for the Twelve Peaks, enshrouded and rain and mist, Five Sisters Peaks, Three Brothers Rocks, The Needle and Goddess Peak.               the Qutang Gorge, the shortest of the three, but quite spectacular. This gorge is a narrow one-way passage, so upstream ships must often wait for downstream ships to clear it before entering.       TRAVELING DOWN THE LESSER GORGES WANXIAN / UPPER YANGTZE CRUISING Today we disembark for a shore excursion to Wanxian, the largest city to be flooded by the Three Gorges Dam reservoir. When docking, we will see buildings sprawled along the steep riverbanks. These will all be underwater in a few years, so an entire new city is being built above the current downtown area.       THE RUSHING YANGTZE AND THE LAST GORGE Cruising toward Chongqing, we observe the old and the new of China. Because of the rise and fall of the river over millennia, the terraced fields are among the most fertile in all of China. Each year new fields are carved out of the higher slopes to prepare for the future rise in the reservoir.
