WUHAN, CHINA

The flight from Beijing to Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, about 90-minutes. This city is the most important site of the republican revolution and as a gateway to the Yangtze Gorges.

THE YANGTZE RIVER VALLEY

Soon, the Three Gorges Dam will begin filling much of the Yangtze Valley with a 370-mile reservoir. When complete, this controversial hydroelectric project will displace 1.25 million people, and submerge 13 cities, 140 towns and 1,352 villages.

This river valley is home to spectacular landscapes of misty mountains, breathtaking gorges, remarkable canyons, bamboo groves, whirlpools and lagoons. Along its narrow, cliff-bound passages lie some of China's greatest cultural treasures - ancient tombs, shrines and walls dating to before the time of Christ. These cultural and natural wonders of this mighty river - the magical landscapes that have graced the watercolors and scroll paintings of China's great artists for thousands of years - will be flooded with the completion in ten years' time of the Three Gorges Dam.

THE THREE GORGES DAM PROJECT

The following photographs are of the Three Gorges Dam project, where the main channel was scheduled to be closed in November, 1997. Until huge new locks on the north bank are completed in a few years, ships will pass the dam site via a temporary channel, which has been dug out of the south bank.

There is not a great deal to see in Chongqing - but there were four hours until our plane so we attempted to make the most of it.

Chongqing is famous for its murky skies - these saved the temporary capital from receiving more damage from Japanese bombers in WW2. Given the lack of clear skies from the highest park I can agree that this fame is deserved!

We didn't plan to go but there was no where else - and we are glad we did. General Stillwell was the US representative in the Chinese temporary capital at the start of WW2. A controversial character.

It felt like going to a National Trust property in the UK - original furniture and photographs. Across the road was the new and developing 'Flying Tigers' museum - also worth a quick look in order to understand an important phase in China's recent history and relations with the outside world.

During breakfast we sailed into and then docked in Chongqing. The water has risen slightly here due to the Three Gorges Dam, but only to make the river level a bit less seasonal. As was the case for much of the time before we disembarked on mud and rock flats.

It was very, very murky - these photos have had some serious Photoshop tweaking to make anything visible at all!
